Excerpt from The Real Lincoln The Genius of History will surely vindicate her right to truth, though a whole people conspire against her. So the man behind the mask, whether it be placed there by himself or others, must at length come forth in his own true character. We have seen, as has been well said, the Lincoln legend in actual process of evolution, and cannot again be surprised at the historical myths that have come down to us from more uncritical ages. But legend and myth must give way before conscientious investigation, an investigation which brings out suppressed facts and points an unerring finger at fallacies and fabrications. Excerpt from The Real Lincoln: A Portrait Not long after the appearance of Herndon's Life of Lincoln, in the preparation of which I collaborated with the author, I was asked by the late Leonard Swett to visit him when I next came to Chicago. In due time I complied with the invitation. It was not long after I had called until our conversation turned on the Life of Lincoln which was then undergoing the test of popular approval. It was soon apparent that Mr. Swett greatly admired Herndon and he was generous and complimentary in his allusions to the book; but while he expressed the belief that Herndon, of all persons who had attempted to narrate the story of Lincolns life, was best qualified to tell all the truth and had religiously tried to do so, yet he felt that in some respects, due probably to his advanced age, he had fallen short of his full task. Mr. Swett intimated that he had talked to certain other friends, to whom he purposed sending me, who knew Lincoln personally, and they coincided with his view. He mentioned Joseph Medill, Horace White, Henry C.Whitney, Leonard W. Volk, the sculptor, and Alexander Hesler, the photographer, all of whom I interviewed. In addition he took me to see Lyman Trumbull, and I listened with deep interest to their recollections of Lincoln and Herndon. Regarding the need, in view of his unusual opportunities, of fuller revelations from Herndon, Swett and Trumbull agreed with each other, but in certain other respects, notably their estimate of Lincoln, they were not in complete accord. Excerpt from Lincoln's First Love: A True Story Two miles south of Petersburg, in the state of Illinois, are the hills of New Salem, picturesque and beautiful; yet with all their picturesqueness and beauty, they would probably never have gained more than local fame had not Abraham Lincoln there spent his early life and met his first love. Just west of the Sangamon River is the hill on which the little town of New Salem was built. It is very steep and rugged until you reach the summit, where it is comparatively level. The view from this hill is one of the most beautiful in Illinois. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Personal Recollections of Lincoln My Comrades and Friends: If there is any person living who should be grateful for such an opportunity as this, and before such an audience, to pay his tribute to Abraham Lincoln, it is myself, for as President he raised me from a citizen to the highest command and highest rank in the army. He was my friend from the time I first met him until I helped to lay him away in Springfield, Illinois. No one can appreciate what that friendship and what his acts were to me, unless they have experienced the benefit of it as I have. Now, before I take up the subject I am to speak upon, I want to read to you Abraham Lincoln's own biography of himself, to show you from what a simple and low station he arose to be a great General, a great Statesman, a most just and kind ruler - the best of this era. In a letter to Mr. F. Fell he writes: I was born February 12, 1809, in Hardin county, Kentucky. My parents were both born in Virginia of undistinguished families - second families perhaps I should say. My mother, who died in my tenth year, was of a family of the name of Hanks, some of whom now reside in Adams and others in Macon counties, Illinois. My paternal grandfather. Excerpt from A Short Life of Abraham Lincoln Entente the essential purposes for which their armies had fought. Conditions such as these inevitably gave rise to keen European interest in Lincoln's life, to writings about him in periodicals, to much conversation among in dividuals, with one notable English biography of him, the first ever written by an Englishman - Lord Charn wood's large volume in the Makers of the Nineteenth Century Series. A notable book was Lord Charn wood's, much read in this country for two years past, and called for in more than one edition soon after its publication. Readers were much imprest, not only by the author's grasp of his theme and his literary gifts, but by his breadth of View, his comprehension of the real things at issue in the American Civil War. Not a few readers saw in it qualities that reminded them of Sir George Otto Trevelyan's The American Revolution, which to many had been found the most satisfying of all works on the subject.
