What happens if an employer cuts wages by one cent? Much of labor economics is built on the assumption that all the workers will quit immediately. Here, Alan Manning mounts a systematic challenge to the standard model of perfect competition. Monopsony in Motion stands apart by analyzing labor markets from the real-world perspective that employers have significant market (or monopsony) power over their workers. Arguing that this power derives from frictions in the labor market that make it time-consuming and costly for workers to change jobs, Manning re-examines much of labor economics based on this alternative and equally plausible assumption. The book addresses the theoretical implications of monopsony and presents a wealth of empirical evidence. Our understanding of the distribution of wages, unemployment, and human capital can all be improved by recognizing that employers have some monopsony power over their workers. Also considered are policy issues including the minimum wage, equal pay legislation, and caps on working hours. In a monopsonistic labor market, concludes Manning, the "free" market can no longer be sustained as an ideal and labor economists need to be more open-minded in their evaluation of labor market policies. Monopsony in Motion will represent for some a new fundamental text in the advanced study of labor economics, and for others, an invaluable alternative perspective that henceforth must be taken into account in any serious consideration of the subject.

Two key words define the scope of this book: 'ultrasound' and 'colloids'. Historically, there has been little real communication between practitioners in these two fields. Although there is a large body of literature devoted to ultrasound phenomenon in colloids, there is little recognition that such phenomena may be of real importance for both the development and applications of colloid science. On the other side, colloid scientists have not embraced acoustics as an important tool for characterizing colloids. The lack of any serious dialogue between these scientific fields is the biggest motivation behind this book. Covers in detail this multidisciplinary field combining acoustics, electroacoustics, colloid science, analytical chemistry and rheology Provides a bibliography with more than 1,000 references Presents theories and their experimental verification, as well as analysis of the methods and hardware pertaining to applications such as pharmaceuticals, ceramics, and polymers

Economics In Two Lessons written by John Quiggin and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-23 with Business & Economics categories.

A masterful introduction to the key ideas behind the successes—and failures—of free-market economics Since 1946, Henry Hazlitt’s bestselling Economics in One Lesson has popularized the belief that economics can be boiled down to one simple lesson: market prices represent the true cost of everything. But one-lesson economics tells only half the story. It can explain why markets often work so well, but it can’t explain why they often fail so badly—or what we should do when they stumble. As Nobel Prize–winning economist Paul Samuelson quipped, “When someone preaches ‘Economics in one lesson,’ I advise: Go back for the second lesson.” In Economics in Two Lessons, John Quiggin teaches both lessons, offering a masterful introduction to the key ideas behind the successes—and failures—of free markets. Economics in Two Lessons explains why market prices often fail to reflect the full cost of our choices to society as a whole. For example, every time we drive a car, fly in a plane, or flick a light switch, we contribute to global warming. But, in the absence of a price on carbon emissions, the costs of our actions are borne by everyone else. In such cases, government action is needed to achieve better outcomes. Two-lesson economics means giving up the dogmatism of laissez-faire as well as the reflexive assumption that any economic problem can be solved by government action, since the right answer often involves a mixture of market forces and government policy. But the payoff is huge: understanding how markets actually work—and what to do when they don’t. Brilliantly accessible, Economics in Two Lessons unlocks the essential issues at the heart of any economic question.

Real Estate Valuation Theory written by Manya M. Mooya and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-17 with Business & Economics categories.

This monograph critically reviews and updates real estate valuation theory, which is based on neoclassical economics, in light of developments in heterodox economic theory. Building on a comprehensive historical account of the evolution of value theory, the book uses new institutional economics theory and critical realism as lenses through which problems in standard valuation theory and practice are expatiated, and as the foundation for an alternative theory. The new theory is employed to explain major problems in real estate valuation that are beyond the capability of the standard theory, such as price bubbles in real estate markets, anchoring bias, client influence and valuation under uncertain market conditions.

Navigating Right And Wrong written by Daniel E. Lee and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-10-09 with Philosophy categories.

How should I live my life? Is there really anything that is inherently right or wrong? These may sound like simple questions, but finding answers to them is anything but simple-particularly in an age of ethical pluralism. In our multicultural, multiethnic world, is there any meaningful way to talk about moral obligations? Daniel Lee says yes. In Navigating Right and Wrong, this long-time ethicist and teacher helps us begin to reconcile our personal moral commitments with an openness to alternatives, with an eye to responsibly negotiating ethics and morality in our pluralistic age. Through concise, thoughtful prose and engaging anecdotes, Lee introduces readers to various philosophical and theological moral theories, ultimately arguing that we must embrace a faith-based ethics, or succumb to the alternative—ethical subjectivism. In the final analysis, Lee asserts, we can do no more than acknowledge that the value claims we make are part of the faith we affirm, be it one that is explicitly religious or entirely secular in nature. Assuming no prior philosophical knowledge, Navigating Right and Wrong will be of use to general readers, students, and anyone else who has ever earnestly asked the question, Is there really anything that is right or wrong?
