The thesis offers a socio-historical study which examines Georg Kaiser's place in German cultural life as seen through the reviews of his plays. The reviews are intended as a counterbalance to the published texts. Volume I contains an edited documentation of 585 reviews (and supporting documents) of 44 of Kaiser's plays which were premiered from 1915-45. This documentation makes available to scholars, in a single volume, reviews collected from archives and libraries in Canada and Europe. Over 90% of these reviews have not been reprinted since 1945 and are not readily accessible. Presenting a wide panorama of contemporary opinions towards Kaiser's dramas and concentrating on the premieres and major provincial and Berlin productions, the documentation recreates an important period of theatre history. Volume II, a commentary, highlights the major points discussed by Kaiser's contemporaries. Many problems of interest to modern critics are discussed - e.g. Kaiser's breakthrough as a dramatist, his problems with the censors, his difficulties with the Nazis, political attitudes towards his dramas, the categorisation of his plays and their topicality in their social context. The bibliography lists, for the period 1915-45, all the reviews which are contained in the "Georg Kaiser Collection" (University of Alberta) as well as the reviews which I have collected from other sources.

In the first musicological study of Kurt Weill’s complete stage works, Stephen Hinton charts the full range of theatrical achievements by one of twentieth-century musical theater’s key figures. Hinton shows how Weill’s experiments with a range of genres—from one-act operas and plays with music to Broadway musicals and film-opera—became an indispensable part of the reforms he promoted during his brief but intense career. Confronting the divisive notion of "two Weills"—one European, the other American—Hinton adopts a broad and inclusive perspective, establishing criteria that allow aspects of continuity to emerge, particularly in matters of dramaturgy. Tracing his extraordinary journey as a composer, the book shows how Weill’s artistic ambitions led to his working with a remarkably heterogeneous collection of authors, such as Georg Kaiser, Bertolt Brecht, Moss Hart, Alan Jay Lerner, and Maxwell Anderson.

This is the first book-length study to consider Ricarda Huch's historical-political thought and assess Huch's place within the lively historiographical discourses of the 1920s. One of the most famous writers of her day, Huch (1864-1947) was known for her poetry, fiction, and histories of German Romanticism and the Thirty Years' War. Like many of her generation Huch was shaken by Germany's defeat in the First World War, and this shock motivated her to use her historiography to address Germany's post-war situation. Convinced that the German nation possessed an identity best expressed by the ideals of Romanticism, Huch attributed Germany's decline to the westernization of German political culture; absolutism and centralization had replaced the theoretical perfection of the decentralized early Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. Her Weimar histories of medieval and nineteenth-century Germany urged a defeated and traumatized nation to return to a path that had been abandoned during the Wilhelmine Empire. Topics explored include Huch's use of Nietzschean monumentalism, a comparison with popular historians of the period (e.g. E. Kantorowicz), the echoes of her political thought in her poetry and fiction, and her complex relationship to German nationalism.

William Thiele is remembered today as the father of the sound film operetta with seminal classics such as Drei von der Tankstelle (1930). While often considered among the most accomplished directors of Late Weimar cinema, as an Austrian Jew he was vilified during the onset of the Nazi regime in 1933 and fled to the United States where he continued making films until the end of his career in 1960. Enchanted by Cinema closely examines the European musical film pioneer’s work and his cross-cultural perspective across forty years of filmography in Berlin and Hollywood to account for his popularity while discussing issues of ethnicity, exile, comedy, music, gender, and race.
