Excerpt from The Reconciliation of Religion and Science: Being Essays on Immortality Seeing that more than half the differences of opinion in philosophy and theology are due to the use of words in different senses, it may be well to define in what sense the words "religion" and "science" are used in this volume. It is, I may say, the popular, ordinary, and quite intelligible sense which they commonly bear - indeed, in my opinion, the general public has often a better reason for, and more method in, its use of language than the wise men who are for ever setting it to rights. Science is simply the process by which mankind derives knowledge from reasoning about facts. (Occasionally I may have used the word in its more restricted sense of "natural" science - i.e., that department of knowledge which deals with physical facts.) Religion is the word that describes the relations of man with the power or being whom we call God. Now the quarrel between these two has hitherto consisted in this. Science affirms that nothing is to be regarded as true except that which can be proved by rational arguments addressed to reasonable beings, founded upon facts capable of analysis and verification. On this question a layman and scientific teacher here ventures to offer some thoughts. The discussions in which they are embodied aim to reach some of the ground-principles on which the propositions of science and religion alike rest. They enunciate a substantial basis of harmony and mutual helpfulness, and disclose a promised synthesis of deepest scientific conviction and simplest religious faith. Although much has been written about the vigorous debates over science and religion in the Victorian era, little attention has been paid to their continuing importance in early twentieth-century Britain. Reconciling Science and Religion provides a comprehensive survey of the interplay between British science and religion from the late nineteenth century to World War II. Peter J. Bowler argues that unlike the United States, where a strong fundamentalist opposition to evolutionism developed in the 1920s (most famously expressed in the Scopes "monkey trial" of 1925), in Britain there was a concerted effort to reconcile science and religion. Intellectually conservative scientists championed the reconciliation and were supported by liberal theologians in the Free Churches and the Church of England, especially the Anglican "Modernists." Popular writers such as Julian Huxley and George Bernard Shaw sought to create a non-Christian religion similar in some respects to the Modernist position. Younger scientists and secularists—including Rationalists such as H. G. Wells and the Marxists—tended to oppose these efforts, as did conservative Christians, who saw the liberal position as a betrayal of the true spirit of their religion. With the increased social tensions of the 1930s, as the churches moved toward a neo-orthodoxy unfriendly to natural theology and biologists adopted the "Modern Synthesis" of genetics and evolutionary theory, the proposed reconciliation fell apart. Because the tensions between science and religion—and efforts at reconciling the two—are still very much with us today, Bowler's book will be important for everyone interested in these issues.
