Although Montreal has been a bilingual city since 1760 and demographically dominated by French-speakers for well over a century and a quarter, it was not until the late 1960s that full-fledged challenges to the city’s English character emerged. Since then. two decades of agitation over la question linguistique as well as the enactment of three language laws have altered the places of French and English in Montreal‘s schools, public administration, economy. and even commercial signs. In this book, Marc Levine examines the nature of this stunning transformation and, in particular, the role of public policy in promoting it. The reconquest of Montreal by the French-speaking majority makes for interesting history. It includes episodes of intense conflict and occasional violence and tells the fascinating story of how an economically disadvantaged and culturally threatened linguistic community mobilized politically and used the state to redistribute group power in Canada’s second largest city. This history of a city in motion presents an entire picture of the changes that have marked the region as it spread from the old city of Ville-Marie into parishes, autonomous towns, boroughs, and suburbs on and off the island. The first volume encompasses the city up to 1930, vividly depicting the lives of First Nations prior to the arrival of Europeans, colonization by the French, and the beginning of British Rule. The crucial roles of waterways, portaging, paths, and trails as the primary means of travelling and trade are first examined before delving into the construction of canals, railways, and the first major roads. Nineteenth-century industrialization created a period of near-total change in Montreal as it became Canada's leading city and witnessed staggering population growth from less than 20,000 people in 1800 to over one million by 1930. The second volume treats the history of Montreal since 1930, the year that the Jacques Cartier Bridge was opened and allowed for the outward expansion of a region, which before had been confined to the island. French North America in the Shadows of Conquest is an interdisciplinary, postcolonial, and continental history of Francophone North America across the long twentieth century, revealing hidden histories that so deeply shaped the course of North America. Modern French North America was born from the process of coming to terms with the idea of conquest after the fall of New France. The memory of conquest still haunts those 20 million Francophones who call North America home. McDougall believes that study of Kierans' career is important for two reasons: Kierans not only combined practical business and governmental experience with a coherent economic and philosophical outlook but also maintained a comprehensive and integrated approach to the major issues in Canadian politics national unity, economic independence, federal-provincial relations, regional development, resource policy, and macro-economic policy. McDougall examines Kierans' career from his appointment as president of the Montreal Stock Exchange in 1960 to his service as chairman of the Nova Scotia commission on the Charlottetown Accord during the early 1990s. He focuses on Kierans' relationship with René Lévesque in the government of Jean Lesage, his fights within the Trudeau cabinet over the reform of the post office and the development of the Anik satellite, and his criticisms of Canadian economic and resource policies in the 1970s. Using Kierans' ministerial and personal records, his publications and speeches, interviews with him and his former associates, and a variety of secondary sources, the author argues that much of what Kierans said and accomplished is unique and remains relevant to the economic and political problems of today. Kierans has demonstrated that powerful political forces often prevent good ideas and determined effort from improving public policy but he has also shown that thoughtful and responsible public service can at least raise the level of public debate.

Gordon shows that while individual memory is crucial to establishing and maintaining identity, public memory is contested terrain - official customs and traditions, monuments, historic sites, and the celebration of anniversaries and festivals serve to order individual and collective perceptions of the past. Public memory is therefore the product of competitions and ideas about the past that are fashioned in a public sphere and speak primarily about structures of power. It conscripts historical events in a bid to guide shared memories into a coherent narrative that helps individuals negotiate their place in broader collective identities.
