"The Red Reign" by Kellogg Durland is a biographical piece of literature that recounts the author's year in Russia during the early 1900s. Taking place less than a decade before the Russian Revolution of 1917 that saw the Tsar removed from power, Durland shows the beginning stages of the civil unrest that lead to the country's transition from monarchy to the Provisional Government and, finally, the Russian Republic. This book gives a unique look at what life was like for common citizens in early 20th century Russia. In fact, this first-hand experience shows that the revolution that followed was, in fact, far from surprising.

The Russian revolution is one of the vital issues of the world today. The political revolt, presenting, as it does, so many unique and dramatic developments, tends to distract the attention of the world from the broader, deeper, and certainly not less important, phases of the movement which are found in the social and eco nomic upheaval. The working out of these forces political, social, economic - in one stupendous move ment, constitutes one of the great revolutions of history. Revolution implies absolute change. Thether civil war, or intense parliamentary struggle, or both, is the method of accomplishment, is of small consequence. The ulti mate outcome is the Same. The present movement of the Russian people toward a changed condition of life is but the manifestation of underlying forces of history and destiny to which all nations must yield. Revolution in Russia during the first quarter of the twentieth century is as inevitable as the bursting of a Pelee or a Vesuvius. Kellogg Durland (1881-1911) was an American social worker and writer born in New York City. In 1901 he worked for four months as a coal miner in Scotland to study mining conditions at first-hand, publishing Among the Fife Miners in 1904. From 1904-05 he became an assistant at University Settlement, New York, and went on to give lectures on events and conditions in Russia after spending a year in that country gathering information. His book The Red Reign: The True Story of an Adventurous Year in Russia was published in 1908. Copiously illustrated with photographs throughout, many taken by the author himself, the book provides an in-depth analysis of the conditions Durland witnessed at first-hand during his lengthy stay in Russia at a time of increasing civil unrest prior to WWI and the Bolshevik Revolution. He was also the author of Royal Romances of To-day (1911) telling the stories of the courtship and marriage of Alexandra, wife of Tsar Nicholas II, Queen Elena of Italy, and Queen Victoria Eugenie of Spain. In November 1911 Durland committed suicide by taking cyanide of potassium.

This handbook brings together recent and emerging research in the broad areas of women and gender studies focusing on pre-revolutionary Russia, the Soviet Union and the post-Soviet Russian Federation. For the Soviet period in particular, individual chapters extend the geographic coverage of the book beyond Russia itself to examine women and gender relations in the Soviet ‘East’ (Tatarstan), Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) and the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania). Within the boundaries of the Russian Federation, the scope moves beyond the typically studied urban centres of Moscow and St Petersburg to examine the regions (Krasnodar, Novosibirsk), rural societies and village life. Its chapters examine the construction of gender identities and shifts in gender roles during the twentieth century, as well as the changing status and roles of women vis-a-vis men in Soviet political institutions, the workplace and society more generally. This volume draws on a broad range of disciplinary and methodological approaches currently being employed in the academic field of Russian studies. The origins of the individual contributions can be identified in a range of conventional subject disciplines – history, literature, sociology, political science, cultural studies – but the chapters also adopt a cross- and inter-disciplinary approach to the topic of study. This handbook therefore builds on and extends the foundations of Russian women’s and gender studies as it has emerged and developed in recent decades, and demonstrate the international, indeed global, reach of such research

Over the course of more than three centuries of Romanov rule in Russia, foreign visitors and residents produced a vast corpus of literature conveying their experiences and impressions of the country. The product of years of painstaking research by one of the world’s foremost authorities on Anglo-Russian relations, In the Lands of the Romanovs is the realization of a major bibliographical project that records the details of over 1200 English-language accounts of the Russian Empire. Ranging chronologically from the accession of Mikhail Fedorovich in 1613 to the abdication of Nicholas II in 1917, this is the most comprehensive bibliography of first-hand accounts of Russia ever to be published. Far more than an inventory of accounts by travellers and tourists, Anthony Cross’s ambitious and wide-ranging work includes personal records of residence in or visits to Russia by writers ranging from diplomats to merchants, physicians to clergymen, gardeners to governesses, as well as by participants in the French invasion of 1812 and in the Crimean War of 1854-56. Providing full bibliographical details and concise but informative annotation for each entry, this substantial bibliography will be an invaluable tool for anyone with an interest in contacts between Russia and the West during the centuries of Romanov rule.
