Excerpt from The Red War on the Family It hardly is necessary to state to observant readers that in those countries where socialism dominated the state it has not made an impressive showing, even to those of the socialist faith, as is evidenced by the many apologies offered by the latter for the lack of success met with by socialist visionaries in such countries. But their experience has not been Without value, and enables us more correctly to appraise socialism than ever before. Excerpt from The Red War on the Family It should not be necessary to apologize for yet another volume on socialism. True, much has been written on both sides, and publication assuredly will continue until such time, if it ever comes, when socialism will be an assured fact or will be relegated to the limbo where peacefully rest for all time other theories of life that, too, had their outspoken defenders, other philosophies that in their day, like socialism to-day, made their appeals to the hearts and minds of men. But even before the close of the greatest war in history a material change had taken place in the world's affairs, and necessarily in the socialist philosophy. Socialism in some measure is not as it was, and transmuted into practice it has undergone radical change. Because of such change the opposition is compelled to revise its methods and its arguments and to adopt an entirely different outlook on what before had been regarded by some fearful ones as a remote threat but which since has become an immediate menace to existing institutions. A material change has taken place in some of the great countries of the world but lately participants in the Great War, and socialism, the great "doctrine of despair," as ever has thrived on the unrest resulting from defeat. In the 1920s, cultural and political reactions to the Red Scare in America contributed to a marked shift in the way Americans thought about sexuality, womanhood, manhood, and family life. The Russian Revolution prompted anxious Americans sensing a threat to social order to position heterosexuality, monogamy, and the family as a bulwark against radicalism. In her probing and engaging book, Red War on the Family, Erica Ryan traces the roots of sexual modernism and the history of antiradicalism and antifeminism. She illuminates how Americans responded to foreign and domestic threats and expressed nationalism by strengthening traditional gender and family roles-especially by imposing them on immigrant groups, workers, women, and young people. Ryan argues that the environment of political conformity in the 1920s was maintained in part through the quest for cultural and social conformity, exemplified by white, middle-class family life. Red War on the Family charts the ways Americanism both reinforced and was reinforced by these sexual and gender norms in the decades after World War I.

A flash flood in the Arizona desert brings Nastas, a lone Navajo brave, into the national spotlight. His heroic efforts to save a young girl trapped in the melee leave him wounded, and Spirits lead him to an oasis cultivated by Keane, a white-man-turned-shaman whose place in the Navajo tribe is becoming increasingly important. Meanwhile, Keane's brother, Archer, encounters a series of mysterious figures and events in Ireland, where he is spending a semester at Trinity College. Both brothers are unaware that they are inextricably linked as the reincarnated Little War Gods of Navajo legend, and that dark forces in a rogue Christian sect (led by the fundamentalist seductress, Sibella) and the Navajo Spirit world are determined to harness the Gods for their own ends. Each player is eventually led to Black Rock - the sacred point of contact between the old world and the new - where both sides are confronted with a third, terrifying force. In a step beyond the typical "good versus evil" construct, Little Red War Gods explores the more potent conflict between "good versus good"; when both sides of a holy war are fighting in the name of their own gods, who will resort to evil ends in order to champion what's "right"?

This instant #1 New York Times bestseller and “modern techno-thriller” (New York Journal of Books) follows Mitch Rapp in a race to prevent Russia’s gravely ill leader from starting a full-scale war with NATO. When Russian president Maxim Krupin discovers that he has inoperable brain cancer, he’s determined to cling to power. His first task is to kill or imprison any of his countrymen who can threaten him. Soon, though, his illness becomes serious enough to require a more dramatic diversion—war with the West. Upon learning of Krupin’s condition, CIA director Irene Kennedy understands that the US is facing an opponent who has nothing to lose. The only way to avoid a confrontation that could leave millions dead is to send Mitch Rapp to Russia under impossibly dangerous orders. With the Kremlin’s entire security apparatus hunting him, he must find and kill a man many have deemed the most powerful in the world. Success means averting a war that could consume all of Europe. But if his mission is discovered, Rapp will plunge Russia and America into a conflict that neither will survive in “a timely, explosive novel that shows yet again why Mitch Rapp is the best hero the thriller genre has to offer” (The Real Book Spy).

Wars in the post-Cold War era are overwhelmingly internal or civil wars. Civilians, mostly women, children, and the elderly, make up over ninety percent of the casualties in these wars. This statistic has convinced the world's premier war-relief organization, the Swiss-based International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), to take on a new mission: to make these wars dysfunctional and to end them. Berry reveals how this mission remains unpublicized and unsaid, due to the effect which many fear it would have on the ICRC's traditional purpose of providing war relief. Exposing the ICRC's intricate and ambitious strategy, Berry shows how it was put into operation in the former Yugoslavia, Rwanda, the Sudan, Aghanistan, and Guatemala. The book reveals that a major non-governmental organization, while proclaiming to be non-political, has a huge political agenda.
