Perkins (communication and cultural studies, Curtin U. of Technology) challenges the idea that the decline of magic is the result of the rise of scientific knowledge and the spread of education. She argues that 19th-century marginalization of superstition is part of a social history of time management. In th course of her discussion she relates differing concepts of time to colonial discourse, surveys technological developments in the calculation of time, and assesses the role of popular beliefs in astrology, books of fate, and prophetic dreaming. This book aims to gain a better grasp of how education, both inside and outside school, is shaped by our understanding of time. Over the last decennia, both education and policymaking have undergone radical changes, transcending them far beyond the historical limits of the modern nation-state where their contemporary shape originated. The often-discussed shift from government to governance in education policy, together with the crystallization of newly emerging spaces of transnational education, are illustrative in this respect. The national grammar of schooling is set out to arrange time in class hours, schooldays and yearly cohorts. Its curricula establish what the past should teach to future generations. But when education shifts perspectives towards transnational, European or even global levels, this past increasingly seems to lose relevance when understood as continuity and as tradition. Instead, in education as in policymaking, the discontinuity expected to result from a future deemed open and undetermined becomes an endless resource for the development of new political and educational (re)forms. How are contemporary education and education policy creating and reacting to particular forms of presents, pasts or futures? How do specific forms of education (such as lifelong learning) relate to our shifting understandings of time? How are progress, acceleration and time related in educational reform processes? Through showing the contingency of time-making in educational practices, the contributions to this book seek to answer these questions and thus open avenues to think education and time anew. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Educational Philosophy and Theory.

The Proper Of Time In The Post Vatican Ii Liturgical Reforms written by Matthew Hazell and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-12 with categories.

The aim of The Proper of Time in the Post-Vatican II Liturgical Reforms is to allow easy comparison of the work of the Consilium ad exsequendam Constitutionem de Sacra Liturgia on the prayers of the Roman Missal with those found in the 1962 Missal and the 1970/2002 Missal. The Consilium ad exsequendam Constitutionem de Sacra Liturgia, better known as the Consilium, was the body that, during the Second Vatican Council, was made responsible for the reform of the liturgy that was desired by the Constitution on the Liturgy (Sacrosanctum Concilium). One of the various documents of Group 18 of the Consilium, Schema 186, deals with the reform of the various prayers (collects, prayers over the gifts, etc.) contained in the Proper of Time of the Roman Missal, and gives draft texts for each day in this section. The prayers of the Ordinary and Extraordinary Forms of the Roman Rite are, in many places, very different. In recent years, these differences and the work of the Consilium have increasingly been the object of scholarly study and enquiry. Now, in The Proper of Time in the Post-Vatican II Liturgical Reforms, the corpus of orations in Schema 186 are readily available for the first time, and have been arranged side-by-side in parallel with those of the 1962 and 1970/2002 Missals for easy comparison. Various tools and indices are also provided in the book to aid further study and research into this important aspect of the post-Vatican II liturgical reforms.

The Global Transformation Of Time written by Vanessa Ogle and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-12 with History categories.

"This book is a revisionist account of attempts to unify clock times, calendars, and social time, and a methodological intervention in discussions about writing global and transnational history. The book uses the reform of time between 1870 and 1950 as a lens through which to understand the dynamics of globalization. Based on research in archives around the world in multiple languages, individual chapters take the story of uniform time to France and Germany, Britain, the British Empire/German colonies/Latin America, British India, Arab elites in the Levant, Muslim scholars in Egypt, and to the League of Nations. The author shows how cross-border flows of ideas and concepts of uniform time resulted in a nationalization and regionalization of temporal identities. As a consequence, uniform, accurate clock time remained nonstandardized, unstable, and incomplete as late as the 1930s and 1940s. Calendar reform, just as vivid and vast a field of activism as clock time, never came to pass altogether due to strong national and religious objections to a uniform World Calendar. When ideas about uniform time moved across borders and continents, they often did so along lateral, informal trajectories of transmission. Local initiatives often preceded national time politics. Top-down attempts to devise time reform schemes at international conferences, to implement them nationally, and assure application in the most remote local contexts rarely succeeded. Rather, globalization disheveled such hierarchies of the international, the national, and the local. The book, then, emphasizes the importance of nationalism and states as well as attention to scale in writing the history of global flows and connections"--

Local Public Sector Reforms In Times Of Crisis written by Sabine Kuhlmann and has been published by Palgrave Macmillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-05 with Political Science categories.

This book compares the trajectories and effects of local public sector reform in Europe and fills a research gap that has existed so far in comparative public administration and local government studies. Based on the results of COST research entitled, ‘Local Public Sector Reforms: an International Comparison’, this volume takes a European-scale approach, examining local government in 28 countries. Local government has been the most seriously affected by the continuously expanding global financial crisis and austerity policies in some countries, and is experiencing a period of increased reform activity as a result. This book considers both those local governments which have adopted or moved away from New Public Management (NPM) modernization to ‘something different’ (what some commentators have labelled ‘post-NPM’), as well as those which have implemented ‘other-than-NPM measures’, such as territorial reforms and democratic innovations.

Annotation. As the education reform movement matures into its second decade, it is clear that many promising efforts have fallen short in their attempts to create real school change. One reason for this is that the process of school reform is much more complex than most reformers realized or were willing to acknowledge. The Dimensions of Time and the Challenge of School Reform points to another problem--the problem of time--and its role in both the success and failure of school reform efforts. The importance of understanding the role that time plays in both learning and instruction and finding ways to provide time for teachers grappling with change and students learning to accommodate a new language and culture are important themes in this book. This book is directed to policymakers and practitioners as well as to academics in that it combines theory with the "real world" experiences of many who have been active in the school reform movement and who have learned, through trial and error, how to think about time in innovative ways. International Organization in Time investigates the effects of reform programs on international organizations (IOs). Drawing on insights from historical institutionalism and sociological organization theory, the book develops a theory of IO fragmentation to account for the centrifugal tendencies of the global polity. Focusing on the reform problems in the United Nations system in general and the World Health Organization in particular, the findings of International Organization in Time not only advance scholarly understanding of institutional development beyond the state, but also raise important questions about the legitimacy of international organizations.
