In 1999, John Ralston Saul began predicting that globalism would collapse. In 2005, he laid out this scenario in The Collapse of Globalism: and the Reinvention of the World Now he has enlarged the book, showing how today's crisis came about and suggesting what to do next. In this new edition, Saul describes the current financial crisis as a mere boil to be lanced. The far more serious problem is that the West—driven by most of its economists, managers, consultants, and columnists—remains stuck on outdated ideas of growth, wealth creation, and trade expansion. They are still tryin to limit the debate to a narrow choice between protectionism and free trade and are concentrated on old-fashioned stimulation. Public policy has been dominated by the people who created this crisis. Saul envisions a new sort of wealth creation and growth, and in place of reaction, advocates new forms of action.

The late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries saw the virtual reinvention of the known world. This book looks at the writing of the period from new perspectives, showing how the intellectual and cultural climate shaped and reshaped authors' responses and how it was, in turn, refracted by their works. Milton, Defoe, Swift, and Pope are discussed--but often in new guises and with emphasis on their involvement in contemporary cultural issues--along with lesser known writers such as Traherne, Behn, and the Wartons.

Globalization is now officially dead. Its collapse has left us with a paradox--a chaotic vacuum. Governments and citizens are unexpectedly reasserting their national interests. The U.S. appears determined to ignore its critics. Europe struggles with racism, terrorism and renewed internal nationalism. Elsewhere, the world looks for answers to African debt, the aids epidemic, and fundamentalism. As well as analyzing Globalism's negative aspects, Saul also examines its successes, such as the astonishing growth in world trade and the rise of India and China. Insightful and prophetic, "The Collapse of Globalism" is one of the seminal books of our time.

Securing The World Economy written by Patricia Clavin and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-03 with History categories.

Securing the World Economy explains how efforts to support global capitalism became a core objective of the League of Nations. Based on new research drawn together from archives on three continents, it explores how the world's first ever inter-governmental organization sought to understand and shape the powerful forces that influenced the global economy, and the prospects for peace. It traces how the League was drawn into economics and finance by the exigencies of the slump and hyperinflation after the First World War, when it provided essential financial support to Austria, Hungary, Greece, Bulgaria, and Estonia and, thereby, established the founding principles of financial intervention, international oversight, and the twentieth-century notion of international 'development'. But it is the impact of the Great Depression after 1929 that lies at the heart of this history. Patricia Clavin traces how the League of Nations sought to combat economic nationalism and promote economic and monetary co-operation in a variety of, sometimes contradictory, ways. Many of the economists, bureaucrats, and policy-advisors who worked for it played a seminal role in the history of international relations and social science, and their efforts did not end with the outbreak of the Second World War. In 1940 the League established an economic mission in the United States, where it contributed to the creation of organizations for the post-war world - the United Nations Organization, the IMF, the World Bank, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization - as well as to plans for European reconstruction and co-operation. It is a history that resonates deeply with challenges that face the Twenty-First Century world.

Largely ignored for decades, the World Bank increasingly finds itself at the center of an international political maelstrom. Attacked by the Right as the last bastion of socialism and by the Left as an instrument of economic imperialism, the Bank has struggled to adapt to a changing post-Cold War era. Still the world's leading development institution in terms of size and influence, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development's failure to articulate and implement a convincing strategy to reduce world poverty has left it vulnerable to the charge that, at least in its present form, it has outlived its usefulness. In a book neither funded nor controlled by its subject, leading North American and British scholars critically examine the World Bank. They contend that an institution that has grown to unmanageable proportions through internally driven change cannot realistically be expected to effect its own reform program. All the Bank's previous attempts at self-redesign have failed, and the contributors argue it is beyond reform; it must be reinvented.Reinvention involves a thoroughgoing and externally controlled process of transformation, starting from basic principles and encompassing three closely related dimensions: operations, or the fit between the Bank's lending program and its development objectives; concepts, its vision of development and anti-poverty strategy; and power, which includes the Bank's relationships with member countries and the wider public, as well as structures of internal governance and accountability.

A history of one of the most influential American companies of the last century. For decades, IBM shaped the way the world did business. IBM products were in every large organization, and IBM corporate culture established a management style that was imitated by companies around the globe. It was “Big Blue, ” an icon. And yet over the years, IBM has gone through both failure and success, surviving flatlining revenue and forced reinvention. The company almost went out of business in the early 1990s, then came back strong with new business strategies and an emphasis on artificial intelligence. In this authoritative, monumental history, James Cortada tells the story of one of the most influential American companies of the last century. Cortada, a historian who worked at IBM for many years, describes IBM's technology breakthroughs, including the development of the punch card (used for automatic tabulation in the 1890 census), the calculation and printing of the first Social Security checks in the 1930s, the introduction of the PC to a mass audience in the 1980s, and the company's shift in focus from hardware to software. He discusses IBM's business culture and its orientation toward employees and customers; its global expansion; regulatory and legal issues, including antitrust litigation; and the track records of its CEOs. The secret to IBM's unequalled longevity in the information technology market, Cortada shows, is its capacity to adapt to changing circumstances and technologies.

After two decades of reinvention, Japanese companies are re-emerging as major players in the new digital economy. They have responded to the rise of China and new global competition by moving upstream into critical deep-tech inputs and advanced materials and components. This new "aggregate niche strategy" has made Japan the technology anchor for many global supply chains. Although the end products do not carry a "Japan Inside" label, Japan plays a pivotal role in our everyday lives across many critical industries. This book is an in-depth exploration of current Japanese business strategies that make Japan the world's third-largest economy and an economic leader in Asia. To accomplish their reinvention, Japan's largest companies are building new processes of breakthrough innovation. Central to this book is how they are addressing the necessary changes in organizational design, internal management processes, employment, and corporate governance. Because Japan values social stability and economic equality, this reinvention is happening slowly and methodically, and has gone largely unnoticed by Western observers. Yet, Japan's more balanced model of "caring capitalism" is both competitive and transformative, and more socially responsible than the unbridled growth approach of the United States.

Despite - or because - we live in calculative and instrumental times in higher education, liberal arts colleges and programmes are flourishing. They draw students fascinated by society and culture who want to make a creative contribution. The Reinvention of Liberal Learning around the Globe is an indispensable introduction to this diverse and brilliant educational world. (Simon Marginson, Professor of Higher Education; Director of ESRC/RE Centre for Global Higher Education, University of Oxford) The editors pull together a diverse set of authors to share a wide range of approaches and trends in shaping the present and future of our liberal arts institutions and programs. The diversity of perspectives makes this book of interest and use to anyone thinking deeply about and acting in support of the future of higher education and liberal arts education. (Michael McDonald, President, Great Lakes Colleges Association and the Global Liberal Arts Alliance) This book rigorously questions and redefines liberal arts education by examining unique contexts of Asia, North and South America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. It also considers the complexity of contemporary issues and emerging innovations in higher education. With the diversity of perspectives and experiences presented by the international authors, we could envision future liberal arts education in nurturing global and caring leaders with multiple collaborative possibilities through this book. (Mikiko Nishimura, Professor of International Christian University, Japan; Co-President of the Global Research Network for Liberal Arts Education) This volume comprehensively documents the transforming nature of liberal arts institutions within the overall tensions provided by the global pandemic occurring at the intersection with a major transitional moment of technology and communication. Its timeliness is underscored by the geographic reach of its contributions, providing a unique perspective on the multitude of ways in which higher education is responding to these powerful forces. (Deane E. Neubauer, Professor Emeritus of Political Science, University of Hawaii, Manoa; Associate Director of the Asia Pacific Higher Education Research Partnership) This is a most timely overview and analysis of liberal arts worldwide. The editors brought together thoughtful scholars from around the world to demonstrate the dogged persistence, resiliency, and vulnerability of the liberal arts. For those who still believe that the key value of higher learning is to enrich the intellect, enliven the spirit, and take more responsibility for the future of humanity, this valuable book provides a framework for the future. “A fascinating story of regeneration. Using a social history perspective over different periods, it offers a wonderful case study of urban reinvention.” —Shiri M. Breznitz, Economic Geography Formerly prosperous cities across the United States, struggling to keep up with an increasingly global economy and the continued decline of post-war industries like manufacturing, face the issue of how to adapt to today’s knowledge economy. In Invention and Reinvention, authors Mary Walshok and Abraham Shragge chronicle San Diego’s transformation from a small West Coast settlement to a booming military metropolis and then to a successful innovation hub. This instructive story of a second-tier city that transformed its core economic identity can serve as a rich case and a model for similar regions. Stressing the role that cultural values and social dynamics played in its transition, the authors discern five distinct, recurring factors upon which San Diego capitalized at key junctures in its economic growth. San Diego—though not always a star city—has been able to repurpose its assets and realign its economic development strategies continuously in order to sustain prosperity. Chronicling over a century of adaptation, this book offers a lively and penetrating tale of how one city reinvented itself to meet the demands of today’s economy, lighting the way for others. “This is an important, pioneering book that contributes to our unique understanding of how one place, San Diego, has achieved what most places want: the capacity to evolve and meet the challenges of a constantly changing global economic environment. Walshok and Shragge help us understand why some places thrive while others wither.” —David B. Audretsch, author of Everything in Its Place
