Excerpt from The Relation of Literature to Life Innumerable were the devices of the build ers to keep their inventions afloat. Some paid great attention to the form of the hull, others to the kind of cargo and the loading of it, while others - and these seemed the majority trusted more to some new sort of sail, or new fashion of rudder, or new application of pho pelling power. And it was wonderful to see what these new ingenuities did for a time, and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Literature and Life Perhaps the reader may not feel in these papers that inner solidarity which the writer is conscious of; and it is in this doubt that the writer wishes to offer a word of explanation. He owns, as he must, that they have every appearance of a group of desultory Sketches and essays, without palpable relation to one another, or superficial allegiance to any central motive. Yet he ventures to hope that the reader who makes his way through them will be aware, in the retrospect, of some thing like this relation and this allegiance. Excerpt from The Relation of Literature to History The reading of literature as a necessary prelim inary to history Would, perhaps, more than anything else, act as a remedy for existing conditions. But a difficulty will, perhaps, be urged in convincing the Teutonic school of historians and their American followers, of the necessity, let alone the desirability, of such study; so profoundly is even gold distrusted by those who seek only to mine the quartz without separating it from the precious metal. Excerpt from Little Essays in Literature and Life The way of the familiar essay is one, of the formal essay another. The latter is informational, it defines, proves; the former, seeking for friendlier and more personal relations with the reader, aims at suggestion, stimulation. The familiar essay can be an impression istic reflection of the author's experience in the mighty issues of living, or it may be the frank expression of a mere whim. It should touch many a deep thing in a way to quicken the sense of the charm, wonder, and terror of the earth. The essayist can fly high, if he but have wings, and he can dive deeper than any plum met line of the intellect, should it happen that the Spirit move him. Excerpt from Landmarks of a Literary Life: 1820-1892 Notwithstanding the truth which underlies the French proverb, Quz' s'axmse s'accase, I think it is Often wise to own one's fault without waiting for the arraignment Of another accuser. I find that in the following pages the personal pronoun I is more obtrusive than I thought it would be when, in my Opening chapter, I alluded to my intention Of keeping it very much in the background. These recollections have been produced under the impediments Of defec tive sight and an afflicted right hand; consequently the handwriting was Often so execrable that my dim eyes read it with difficulty, and the patience Of printers must have been sorely tried. Therefore I could not give my work the prolonged personal revision which every manuscript demands from its author. Yet, on reflection, I feel how nearly impos sible it would have been to relate what I had to tell without myself appearing on the scene. Excerpt from A Clerk of Oxenford: Essays on Literature and Life I hope, therefore, that it will be considered on its own merits as a book of essays, and not as a mere transcription of radio talks. Those who have read People, Places, and Books will observe that the range of this collection is considerably wider, and that it goes more deeply into analysis of literary method and substance. Letters from numerous correspondents have convinced me that there is a strong demand in the United States for this type of aesthetic discussion and criticism. I feel sure they are right: hence this book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Study of American Literature The general policy has been to mention relatively few persons, in order to leave a definite impression as to each. The especial interests of students in school or college have been steadily considered. In particular, Hawthorne and Longfellow have been treated with relative fullness and somewhat critical method, because their works have, and should have, a very large part in our popular education. The competent and judicious teacher may prefer to throw more emphasis on other authors, Franklin, Irving, Emerson, or Lowell. In that case the materials are of course abundant and close at hand. The chrono logical tables are an integral portion of the work, and supply many items which may be missed in the text. A fuller treatment of one group will be found in the author's New England Poets, Macmillan, 1898. While the present book comes down to the year 1900, there is, naturally, no attempt to pass final judgment in detail on the career Of men and women still living. Excerpt from Quest and Vision: Essays in Life and Literature The class of men society has been pleased to identify as poets must, in similar fashion, abide by the traditional ideal society has set up. The actor may purge himself and his calling, and live in perfect nobility of life; but the mass of men will still persist in regarding him as an immoral person, whom the law recognizes as a vagrant and to the vulgar mind the poet will still remain a person Of unsound and unsafe life. You cannot persuade society that you are not what the tradition of your calling says you are; and the attempt only results in irrita tion and defiance. Excerpt from On Reading in Relation to Literature No doubt you will think that this statement of the case confuses reading with study. You might say, When we read history or philosophy or science, then we do read very thoroughly, studying all the meanings and bearings of the text, slowly, and thinking about it. This is hard study. But when we read a story or a poem out of class-hour, we read for amusement. Amusement and study are two differ ent things. I am not sure that you all think this; but young men generally do so think. As a matter of fact, every book worth reading ought to be read in precisely the same way that a scientific book is read not simply for amusement; and every book worth reading should have the same amount of value in it that a scientific book has, though the value may be of a totally different kind. For, after all, the good book of fiction or romance or poetry is a scientific work; it has been composed according to the best principles of more than one science, but especially according to the principles of the great science of life, the knowledge of human nature. In regard to foreign books, this is especially true; but the advice suggested will be harder to follow when we read in a language which is not our own. Nevertheless, how many Englishmen do you suppose really read a good book in Eng lish? How many Frenchmen read a great book in their own tongue? Probably not more than one in two thousand of those who think that they read. What is more, although there are now published every year in London upwards of six thousand books, at no time has there been so little good reading done by the average public as to-day. Books are written, sold, and read after a fashion or rather accord ing to the fashion. There is a fashion in literature as well as in everything else; and a particular kind of amusement be ing desired by the public, a particular kind of reading is given to supply the demand. So useless have become to this public the arts and graces of real literature, the great thoughts which should belong to a great book, that men of letters have almost ceased to produce true literature. When a man can obtain a great deal of money by writing a book without style or beauty, a mere narrative to amuse, and knows at the same time that if he should give three.
