Domestic violence is an ongoing national issue that has tainted women across centuries and is still an ongoing issue to date. Research has shown the effects that domestic violence can have on women in regard to their mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing, recognizing how it changes their livelihoods. Shame and guilt play a major role in how women respond to the abuse they have suffered and can dictate whether they receive the proper help needed to overcome abuse or leave an abusive relationship. Religion, as a major component in many people’s lives, can also play a major part in how someone responds to domestic violence, as their behaviors may be led by their religious beliefs. The trauma of domestic violence can way heavy on the mental health of sufferers which results in a reduction of functionality. Research is needed to investigate further if feelings of being flawed, embarrassed, or having thoughts of having to meet specific moral compasses based on religious viewpoints have an impact on domestic violence survivors. This research looks at how shame and guilt coincide with religion and how they all affect victims of domestic abuse.

Church ministry and friends are among the first resources sought by religious individuals suffering marital distress. It has been found that religious support networks can prove to be either invaluable resources, providing emotional and material support, or negative barriers, serving as enablers of the abuse and mediators of victim shame, guilt, and self-blame. Furthermore, battered women of faith encounter unique challenges when disclosing abuse, due to the stigma surrounding divorce in the religious culture. The purpose of this study was to identify the key characteristics that survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) found to be supportive and unsupportive in friendship and religious resources. Additionally, the principle researcher sought to better understand survivors' experience of shame. 199 interviews, a sub-sample retrieved from archival data including 398 abused women from Montana, were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed. A model was developed to display the help-seeking processes battered women in this sample exhibited and the mental and physical outcomes they experienced as a result of supportive and unsupportive interactions with friendship and religious resources. It was found that women had expectations of religious and friendship resources that compelled them to seek the resource's assistance. Based on whether or not these expectations were met and their readiness to change, battered women perceived religious and friendship resources as supportive or unsupportive. It is hoped that these findings will assist religious and friendship resources in their ability to better serve women experiencing IPV.

As #MeToo and its sister movement #ChurchToo demonstrated, sexual violence is systemic in many and varied workplace settings, including Christian churches, and can destroy women’s careers and vocational aspirations. The study draws on empirical evidence – personal stories from survivors and the views of church leaders and educators – in dialogue with theoretical perspectives, to consider clergy sexual abuse of adult women and the conditions that support it. Institutional abuse only changes when survivors come forward. This study focusses on New Zealand Anglicanism, the locus of the author’s experience, and has resonance for a range of denominational settings. It aims to be a useful resource to clergy, ministry educators, and those training for ministry, and to academics and scholars with an interest in theology, gender, and professional ethics. Notably, it will be a potentially helpful text for women survivors of sexual misconduct by clergy, not least those who are considering a future in the church or grieving the loss of one.
