Language plays an important role in linking with the past, with national origins; it is an indispensable tool for communication. With the trend toward globalization and the continual change of the ethnic composition of the U.S. population, there is increasing awareness in the U.S. that not every child is raised in an English-only family. The purpose of this research was to explore the relationships among heritage language proficiency, ethnic identity, and self-esteem in the American-born Chinese (ABC) children who went to the Chinese language schools for Chinese language learning on weekends. There were three research questions to be answered in this study: (1) What is the relationship between Chinese heritage language proficiency and ethnic identity, (2) Is there any connection between heritage language proficiency and self-esteem, and (3) How does ethnic identity associate with self-esteem? A total of 63 students and their 56 parents were surveyed with the Children's Self-Perception of Chinese Language Learning Survey and the Parents' Demographic Questionnaire, respectively. Results showed that there were positive relationships between Chinese heritage language proficiency and ethnic identity, language proficiency and self-esteem, and ethnic identity and self-esteem. There was a significant group difference on the ethnic identity by Chinese language proficiency across the two subgroups: at least one parent from Taiwan and at least one parent from Mandarin-speaking countries other than Taiwan. However, no group difference was found on the self-esteem by Chinese language proficiency. Limitations and implications were discussed.

The field of multi-ethnic identity research is one that has existed largely in the shadow of its more established parental field of ethnic identity. However, multi-ethnic individuals, compared to their mono-ethnic counterparts, uniquely experience the ethnic identity development process. As their demographic grows and begins to garner more attention, the need for a deeper understanding of how these people negotiate their multiple ethnic identities is needed. Using theoretical groundings from current multi-ethnic identity models, major ethnic identity models, and the seminal Social Identity Theory, this thesis assesses the impact that ethnic peer group members' acceptance of multi-ethnic individuals, parental cultural influences, and language skills have on the individuals' ethnic identity development and self-esteem. Hypotheses predicting a positive relationship between parental cultural maintenance and ethnic identity (H1), and parental cultural maintenance with ethnic language proficiency (H4) were both fully supported. Likewise the predicted positive relationships between ethnic language proficiency and ethnic identity (H3), and perceived ethnic peer acceptance (H5) were fully supported. A positive relationship between perceived ethnic peer acceptance and ethnic identity (H2) was only partially supported. Results relating to positive relationships with self-esteem were much more varied. Ethnic identity (H6) and perceived ethnic peer acceptance (H7) both produced partially supported positive relationships with overall self-esteem, whereas ethnic language proficiency (H8) and parental cultural maintenance (H9) resulted in no significant relationship with self-esteem, despite a positive relationship being predicted. A secondary analysis covered in the discussion reevaluates the findings for Hypotheses 6 through 9 controlling for the level of importance individuals hold for each ethnicity in order to better interpret the findings. From these results suggestions for future research are presented.

Many immigrant families (most of whom are minorities) are concerned with the first language (L1) maintenance of their children living in a new country. Some of them still use their mother-language at home and go to the heritage language school weekly to learn heritage language (HL) and cultural traditions. Meanwhile, some of them lose their chance to learn or use their heritage language because of the low exposure of mother-language in the environment of majority language and culture. In this study, I aim to research factors that impact heritage language learning by analyzing interview data from four subjects, two American-born Chinese, one American-born Korean, and one Chinese-born ethnic Koreans, to understand the relationship between HL learning and self-identity. The goal of this study is to contribute to curriculum and pedagogy design for HL learning. The results show that parental and family involvement play a big role of HL language learning. School climates effect ones cultural identity as well. The qualitative analysis also indicates that ones HL language proficiency do not positively correlate to his/her cultural identity because of the intricate relationship between identity construction and HL learning.

Over the past three decades studies investigating heritage speaker (HS) linguistic competencies have shown, time and again that, despite being L1 or 2L1 native speakers of their home language(s), HS outcomes display variation across a wide spectrum of differences as compared to each other, other types of bilinguals as well as their monolingual peers. Studies have traditionally used—mostly behavioral—methodologies rooted in adjacent established fields (e.g., L1 acquisition, adult L2 acquisition) offering, in addition to documenting and describing HS performance, important insights for linguistic theory and challenges related to (home/minority) language maintenance, contact, policy and more. A birds-eye view makes it clear that the methodologies one uses to tap into HSs’ linguistic knowledge areas, if not more, are important than the phenomena under investigation, especially in light of how their unique experiences with their heritage and other languages are present across a continuum.
