Individual achievement in sport is often constrained by an athlete’s age relative to the peers with whom they participate. A common practice within sport and educational domains is to group youth based on their chronological ages to help promote equal competition, age appropriate instruction, and ensure participant safety. While well intended, such grouping practices can often advantage relatively older children, while disadvantaging those who are relatively younger within the same age cohort. These phenomena are known as Relative Age Effects (RAEs). Relative Age Effects in Sport: International Perspectives includes chapters from internationally recognized scholars who have examined RAEs from different perspectives (e.g., sport, mental health and wellbeing, youth development). Relative age effects (RAEs) refer to the participation, selection, and attainment inequalities in the immediate, short-term, and long-term in sports. Indeed, dozens of studies have identified RAEs across male and female sporting contexts. Despite its widespread prevalence, there is a paucity in the empirical research and practical application of strategies specifically designed to moderate RAEs. Thus, the purpose of this book is to situate RAEs in the context of youth sport structures, lay foundational knowledge concerning the mechanisms that underpin RAEs, and offer alternative group banding strategies aimed at moderating RAEs. In order to enhance our knowledge on birth advantages and RAEs to create more appropriate settings, key stakeholders, such as coaches, practitioners, administrators, policy makers, and researchers, are required to understand the possible influence of and interaction between birthplace, engagement in activities, ethnicity, genetic profile, parents, socioeconomic status, and relative age. Thus, in addition to RAEs and alternative group banding strategies, Birth Advantages and Relative Age Effects in Sport also examines the role of additional birth advantages and socio-environmental factors that young athletes may experience in organized youth sport. Drawing from both empirical research and practical examples, this book comprises three parts: (a) organizational structures, (b) group banding strategies, and (c) socio-environmental factors. Overall, this book broadens our understanding of the methodological, contextual, and practical considerations within organizational structures in sport to create more appropriate settings, and strive to make positive, impactful change to lived youth sport experiences. Abstract: The relative age effect and the birthplace effect in the National Football League - Cheung Po-tak (1995048736) Abstract Two contextual factors that have been suggested to influence the likeli- hood of an individual becoming an elite athlete are their relative age and the population size of the community in which they are born and raised. This thesis examines the existence of these factors amongst current National Football League (NFL) players. The first part of this thesis concerns the relative age effect, which is the advantage enjoyed by athletes born earlier in the year, thus being relatively older than other athletes born in the same year (Musch and Grondin, 2001). Previous studies have shown that the relative age effect is weak, or even non-existent, among American Football players. While the data for the players as a whole sug- gests that this is the case, a breakdown of the data according to the players' posi- tions may present us with a new perspective. By looking at the relative age ef- fect on a positional basis, we seek to determine which positions are more likely to be affected by the relative age effect. This study identifies three positions (Run- ning Backs (RBs), Tight Ends (TEs) and Defensive Linemen (DLs)) in which the percentage of players born in the first two birth-quarters out-number those in the 4The relative age effect and the birthplace effect in the National Football League - Cheung Po-tak (1995048736) latter two birth-quarters by the biggest margin. Therefore, it is suggested that these three positions are most heavily affected by the relative age effect. As these positions are characterised by having a very high demand for physical fit- ness and overall athleticism, it is argued that the relative age effect will only bene- fit the relatively older athletes in terms of their physical development. The ab- sence of the relative age effect in positions requiring higher intelligence and men- tal capacity, such as Quarterbacks (QBs), suggests that the relatively older athletes do not enjoy any advantage over the relatively younger ones in this aspect. A further analysis was also carried out within the thesis, concerning the first-round picks of the NFL draft since 1990s, through which we could see whether the birthdate distribution of these high draft picks is similar to that of the players on the 2004 NFL rosters. It has been found that the biggest difference exist among the QBs and TEs, where the relatively older QBs and TEs are more likely to be selected in the first round when compared with the relatively younger ones. To date, few studies have been carried out to analyse the birthplace ef- fect among athletes. This paper considers a relative age effect in association football (soccer) for Republic of Ireland under twenty-one international footballers over two intervals: from November 1981 to November 1994 and from September 2007 to May 2013. As the registration date for organised youth soccer in Ireland differed between both periods, these intervals provide scope for a natural experiment to test for a shifting relative age effect. The paper confirms the existence of a relative age effect with a selection bias toward players born in the earlier months of the registration year for both intervals. Policy recommendations aimed at reducing the impact of relative age effects are discussed and the Irish case is proposed as a benchmark to consider strategies to minimise relative age effects.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Sport - Sport Economics, Sport Management, Tilburg University, course: Master Thesis Economics, language: English, abstract: The Relative Age Effect (RAE) is a phenomenon that impacts an individual's outcome. In particular, the RAE in sports favors those athletes that have been born prior to a cut-off date and is detrimental for those who were born later in the same period. The grouping of soccer players in academies benefits the early born football players in the selection for the elite team because of physical advantages that are based on biological maturation. Therefore, evidence suggests that the effect is more likely to be observed in the lower youth categories. This study examines the RAE in the Dutch football leagues by investigating data from the national teams U-15 and U-19 of the national team. A Pearson X^2 test provides evidence that the observed birth date distribution deviates from the expected one, which leads to a skewed birth date distribution. The findings suggest that the early born football players have indeed an age advantage in the selection system in relation to their late born peers. Moreover, there is higher probability that they will become professional in the future. Also, the RAE seems to decrease overtime, but it still exists, even in the elite category.
