A young coddled boy like so many others in 1945 is pressed into service to defend his country from the evil Axis Powers. He had to grow up fast and become a member of a new destroyer with the killing powers not yet dreamed of in those days. As luck would have it, the war was over before the "Wilson" was launched and Bud Gottesman now only had to survive Navy Boot Camp and life aboard a destroyer with 345 other young sailors in very cramped quarters. From day one, nothing went according to plans. Bud Gottesman had to learn how to adapt and handle things without his parent's supervision and protection. He learned to see the funny side of things instead and grew up with each obstacle he encountered.

Helen Haskins was born and raised in Mackay on the east coast of Australia, to an Australian mother and a refugee Russian immigrant father. Helen grew up and lived the life of a typical Australian woman of her time, getting married at 17, and becoming a home-loving housewife and mother. She liked nothing better than to cook and entertain family and friends, and still does to this day. Due to contracting Rheumatic Fever as a child she was not encouraged to learn to swim or do sports and still does not swim well. Therefore she was ill prepared for marriage to a man who didn't want to settle down and dreamt of spending his life sailing. And sail they did! After Helen and John hand built John's own remodelled 'Spray', a redesign of the famous yacht sailed around the world by Joshua Slocum, they sailed together up the Queensland coast, to New Zealand and New Caledonia on one of the safest designed yachts in the world. Helen retells her adventures with numerous people, frightening storms, unexpected reefs, sprinkled with love, drama and lots of laughter, though some of the laughs would only come later. Join Helen on her fantastic life journey, ever The Reluctant Sailor.

What the hell is wrong with me? A question a young extremely reluctant Merchant Navy Radio Officer Mark Hurst must've asked a thousand times over as blind terror overtook him each time he put to sea. A quick escape was impossible because of a strict four year contract. Heroism in the Falklands earned him respect and a medal but his dread of being at sea continued unabated. Contract completed he mercifully accepts jobs ashore but years later was forced back to sea and disaster. Rescued by Island fishermen despite his terror he attempts a single handed voyage under sail across over two thousand miles of a turbulent and unforgiving Pacific Ocean. Could he ever find a way to pay back those who helped him? Could he ever find peace with the Sea?

The Reluctant Mariner written by Joanna Hackett and has been published by New Holland Australia(AU) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Voyages and travels categories.

The Reluctant Mariner is the story of a couple's circumnavigation of the world in a 12.2 meter yacht, told from the wife's perspective. Far from simply stopping off in each port, the Hacketts made a point of exploring inland and actually seeing as much as they had time to in every country they visited. The trip took them seven years to complete and they spent many months in several of the destinations they visited. This makes her account more than simply another "sailing around the world" book. Joanna describes their adventures, the people they met, the places they visited -- over 37 countries, many of them not on the usual circumnavigation route -- recounting the good as well as the bad experiences. The Reluctant Mariner also describes what it was like for a middle-aged, female landlubber to leave the comforts of home and family and sail off around the world. Initially a very reluctant sailor, Joanna eventually found herself swept along by her husband's vision and quest for adventure. This is the humorous tale of how she adapted and the experiences she had along the way.

Who doesn't want to quit the rat race and pack it all in to see the world? And it is not as if Sherrie and Patrick were strangers to travel. They met on Patrick's first round the world trip by motorcycle. Sherrie fell hard for the open road and the freedom of two wheels and a tent. How much harder could living on a sailboat be? Or at least that was Patrick's opinion. Sherrie is a Newfoundlander. She thought it prudent to bring up the Titanic whenever Patrick mentioned his dream of sailing around the world. And then they had babies. Which meant that dream of sticking them in a sidecar was no longer so realistic. Because putting imaginary babies in your sidecar is very different from putting breathing ones in. The desire to keep up a semi nomadic lifestyle beckoned, but could Sherrie get over her fear of living on the ocean? And just as she agrees to commit to a life afloat, heartbreak and betrayal threaten to end the trip before it even begins. Confessions of A Reluctant Sailor tells of how one family on the verge of breaking up and a woman brought to her knees with grief, went forward with fulfilling a dream and knitting themselves back together, all the while learning the very real difference between fear and danger. If you have ever dreamed of packing up and escaping the rat race, or even wondered how to move forward during a time of heartbreak and loss, get your copy today.

I started reading this book expecting the usual sailboat adventure of novice sailors. Instead, the story unfolded into a personal account by "a reluctant sailor" who lets us in on the mettle it takes to undergo passage of over 3,200 miles from San Francisco to New Caledonia with only her mate. When I finished the tale of these two sixties-something sailors anxiously buying, outfitting their 38-foot sailboat, and crossing the Pacific Ocean, I realized I had just read a love story that wasn't written as such.

Dolphins Under My Bed written by Sandra Clayton and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-03-15 with Travel categories.

Proving that sailing is not just the husband's pursuit, this charming narrative of one couple's first long distance voyage is told from the wife's perspective. Writing in a lively, humorous way, Sandra Clayton gives an entertaining account of her and husband David's maiden cruise from the UK, down the Atlantic coast and into the warm waters of the Mediterranean. Conscious that old age or poor health could prevent them from sailing away for much longer, they left the world of work behind to chase their dream of adventure. Conditions are sometimes maddening, occasionally dangerous, but frequently magical. Marine creatures enchant their days while ships that pass in the night add a touch of romance. But the book is far more than just the story of the Claytons' 2000 mile trip. Somewhat unprepared for what faced them on the way, they had to learn from their own mistakes, finding themselves in places and situations where they never expected to be. The book has plenty to offer those who might consider embarking on a similar voyage of their own: learn how the Claytons did it, which route they took, the beautiful locations they visited, who they met along the way, and their good decisions as well as their bad. A great bunkside read, it may inspire others to make a similar break themselves.
