The transnational industry surrounding assisted reproductive technology and regenerative medicine is based on the unacknowledged labour of gamete providers, surrogates and research subjects, and benefits from low labour costs in ‘enabling’ sectors such as logistics and transport. This finding calls for a comprehensive analysis of how the contemporary intersection of neoliberal capitalism and the life sciences - in short, the bioeconomy - capitalises on the body and its (re)productive capacities. The Reproductive Body at Work uptakes this challenge as it explores the relations between value production, labour and the body in one particular realm of the global bioeconomy: the South African bioeconomy of ‘egg donation’. It highlights different forms and dimensions of unacknowledged or precarious human labour that are constitutive for the procurement, brokering and circulation of oocytes as valuable resources. Reproductive technologies like in vitro fertilization (IVF) lead to the externalization of reproduction, which in turn creates new kinship possibilities, bringing together bodies, gametes, and relationships for reproduction. Concepts of kinship get even more muddled with respect to surrogacy and donor-inseminated births. Along with the development of medical tourism, the transnational fertility industry (DasGupta and Dasgupta 2014; Pande 2014) has grown rapidly, taking the family-building process beyond territories, national boundaries, and cultures. Based on interview research conducted with heterosexual, single, and gay intended parents, as well as doctors, surrogates, and donors, I explore how the narratives coming from different users and providers of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) have created a unique mosaic of criss-crossing ideas on these developing technologies. Intended parents use the same technologies but deploy different narratives to create different types of and discourses on families. My research explores how these new reproductive technologies permeate the “everydayness” of what is meant by family and parenthood. How do these couples reconcile their experiences of infertility with their desire to have families? I am curious to know what kinship notions recur in the narratives when they discuss and share their experiences of infertility, donors, gametes, or surrogacy. I also observed throughout my research a cloud of silence and secrecy around assisted reproduction to which both clients and donors/surrogates were compelled to resort. I identified and explored several stigmas and social constructions around assisted reproduction that prompted them to do so. I argue that the secrecy and silence around assisted reproduction are part of the reproductive narratives that help users and providers of ARTs negotiate the cultural meanings of family, parenthood, and reproductivity.
