Following Mexico's independence from Spain, Central America, under the rule of Guatemala, declared its independence from Mexico in 1823. Soon, however, El Salvador, followed by other population clusters, broke away from this Central American confederation. In 1839, the cluster that is now Guatemala became an independent republic. Since then. At least 25 attempts have been made to reconstitute a Central American political entity-all of them unsuccessful.
