The major thrust of this book is the ethnography of the Awka-Igbo in particular the Northern Igbos. In delineating and analysing the socio-cultural structures, the author attempts to demonstrate their continuity from pre-colonial times to the present, thus showing the resilience of Awka-Igbo culture despite the seventy year British occupation. The core of the work is the ethnography of Awka town, which the author uses to distinguish between local northern customs and those which are pan-Igbo.

"Drawing on her personal experience as a Nigerian, Emmanuela C. Nwokeke C.P. provides a fresh analysis of the socio-political and cultural conditions of the Igbo people via Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart. She examines themes of identity, tradition, and resilience, as well as the ways in which the Igbo people both challenge and are challenged by the changing world. Readers are taken on a journey through the struggles of the Igbo people." -Professor Davide Del Bello (University of Bergamo, Italy) "The book in your hands represents a detailed and creative work on the face-off between British colonialism and pre-colonial Igbo society. Drawing from Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart, the author brilliantly articulates a thriving Igbo culture prior to the British invasion. She challenges the Igbo-pessimistic stereotypes that cast pre-colonial Igbo society as a primitive jungle devoid of civilization. A Clash of Cultures is an excellent companion to Achebe's Things Fall Apart and provides an interpretative lens for appreciating its depth." -Lazarus Ejike Onuh, S.T.L. "A fascinating interpretation of Chinua Achebe and an insight to Things Fall Apart from a postcolonial point of view. A must-read for people from all walks of life." -Sr. Juliet Emereonye, C.P. "There is no doubt that Things Fall Apart is one of the most significant Nigerian novels as the novel portrays in clear terms the conflict between Western culture and Igbo culture during the era of colonization. A Clash of Cultures gives a contemporary analysis of the impact of the conflict and exrays it in vivid terms. This book will give a reader a clear understanding of the current situation. It helps one to know where we are today and how we got there. I highly recommend this book to all." -Fr. Jude Alih, M.S.P. Emmanuela C. Nwokeke, C.P. hails from Imo State, Nigeria. She is a Passionist Sister of St. Paul of the Cross. She holds a BA in Foreign Languages and Literature and an MA in Pan-American Languages and Literature from the University of Bergamo, Italy.

New Dawn For African Women written by Michael Muonwe and has been published by Xlibris Corporation this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-13 with Social Science categories.

The need for renegotiation of the place and role of women in the family, the Church, and the society cannot be any more urgent than now, especially as people are more aware of the devastating effects of the evils of inequality, discrimination, and oppression. It is a pity that the excellent qualities of bravery, industry, resilience, and perseverance historically attributed to African women, with which they negotiated for better place in the family, the Church, and the society, have been manipulated to serve as instruments for their denigration. The problem is that the patriarchal articulations of gender relations from the western world that entered Africa through colonialism, Christianity, western education and globalization allied themselves with the macho elements in African culture, and institutionalized the oppression of women; a move that women have always resisted both overtly and covertly. But how long could they hang on? This book provides exceptional and critical assessment of these issues, especially from the perspective of the Igbo society of Nigeria. Apart from assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the efforts made by women themselves to surmount these challenges, it also explores how the autochthonous values of the traditional culture could integrate with Christian values to enthrone gender equality in the society. Fr Muonwe demonstrated in this present publication his pastoral zeal for justice especially on the predicaments of women in African nay Igbo society. He regrets as it were that the African (Igbo) traditional society is still far from realizing the Christian gospel ideal of dignity and equality of human person because of the obvious environment that is strictly androcentric and carefully crafted in patriarchal hegemony I thank Fr Muonwe for this timely publication especially for many Igbo Christian communities today experiencing crisis in several aspects of our culture I hope the Bishops, the Priests, the Religious and Laity will find in this present work a rare and indispensable treasure for solutions to our pastoral predicaments. Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony B. C. Chiegboka. New Dawn for African Women is encyclopaedic in content and daunting in its wealth of documentation [It] is a well-written book. The contents covered much more than Igbo women, or gender issues. It addressed such other issues as Igbo cosmology, Igbo concept of life and death, the history of Christianity in Igboland and Igbo social anthropology, among others. It is a book, which every Nigerian, especially the Igbo, should read. The book is inspirational and provocative in the extreme; it is original and displays learning lightly carried. One cannot but return to it over and over again after the first reading. I very strongly recommend it to the Nigerian and African reading public. C. Ego Uzoezie (Ph.D.)

The author presented his book Igbo Culture in a most convincing way by quoting expert opinions on most of the issues he discussed in the book. Through his carefully researched work and detailed analysis of facts, he showed in the book that Igbo youths working hard like their ancestors can reform Igboland into a new and better civilization by sifting the good aspects of Igbo culture into today's way of life. He started his book by making a brief reference to the possible migration route of Igbo ancestors from their earliest settlements in the forest region of Central Africa to their present-day settlement in Southeastern Nigeria of West Africa. He also made a brief reference to the development of the Igbo civilization through the period covering the Stone Age and Iron Age civilizations (pages 114). He painted a clear picture of the cultural background of the community where he was born and brought up and lived in for more than sixty years before he traveled to the United States of America. He traced the more than twenty-six generations-deep lineages, beliefs, concepts, customs, and history of Ihe Shikeaguma in Ntuegbe clan of Enugu State in Southeastern Nigeria as a sample core Igbo culture community. He also delved into the historical links and social formation of this community, with emphasis on genealogy, religion, settlement, language, government, law enforcement, defense, seasons, festivals, and residential structures (pages 1583). He took his readers to Igbo thought on God, self, family, human life, birth, death, spirit, human mind, and reincarnation (pages 85113). He clearly documented the cultural products of Igbo thought, which can be seen in the formulation of Igbo institutions with special reference to marriage, the extended family system, the social status structure and title system, festivals, informal education, traditional law, community service, religion, divination, and health-care services (pages 114202). He explained that the symbolism of various articles and some spoken words in Igbo culture are products of Igbo thought. He referred to ofo stick, kola nut, alligator pepper, spears, tribal face marks, body paint, white chalk, and the young palm frond as symbols or instruments of Igbo philosophical expressions and concepts (pages 203214). He showed how Igbo culture and philosophy have been affected by the cultures of Igbo neighbors in Nigeria and by other foreign cultures with special references to the following: (a) Ugwuele civilization (a Stone Age culture)1,000,000 BC500,000 BC (b) Nri civilization (a ritualized kingship system)AD 800AD 1700 (c) Aro civilization (slave trade and colonial era)AD 1700AD 1850 (d) Border civilization (slave trade and colonial era)AD 800AD1900 (e) External civilization (slave trade and colonial era)AD 1700AD 2000 (pages 215238) The author concluded his work by making an evaluation of Igbo culture. He carefully examined the oriented values of the Igbo and highlighted those areas of Igbo culture that should be refurbished and reinfused into Igbo life by the Igbo themselves in order to transform Igboland into a big theater of modern civilization (pages 239246).

The article discusses social practices among the Igbo of South-Eastern Nigeria. It identifies practices that have defied social change and have survived over the years as well as those that have been modified or completely changed. The paper observes the resilience of the Igbo people and their strong kinship ties which they still treasure in spite of the fact that they are well traveled. It observes that in spite of the Igbo people's contact with foreign values and ideas, they still preserve very strong links with their communities; a fact which makes tradition and modernization co-exist in the dynamic Igbo society.
