Democracy operates on consent. That means politicians have an obligation to present and argue their causes in order to ultimately win consensus. Above all, democracy requires honesty—in facing up to challenges, acknowledging fears and dangers, and admitting the limitations of government. But democracy has its flaws, not least in the lack of efficiency in the decision-making process. Amid pressing questions about the nature and limits of democracy, both in Britain and beyond, The Responsibilities of Democracy provides a clear-eyed perspective shared by two former politicians. Two central figures of the British political establishment, John Major and Nick Clegg, share their thoughts on where democracy is heading and how it can survive in the twenty-first century. Offering his perspective as a former prime minister, Major writes of the qualities on which a healthy democracy depends and expresses his deep concerns about the declining decorum of political exchange. Clegg brings a counter-perspective in discussing the ways in which political language has always involved trading insults and argues that echo chambers, although now more sophisticated, are nothing new. Compromise, Clegg insists, is not betrayal, but is instead the very substance of our politics and our democracy. The Responsibilities of Democracy explores the overall health of UK democracy, giving a balanced analysis of its values and flaws. It is also a clarion call to the electorate and politicians to nurture and protect the precious values on which democracy depends.

Excerpt from The Relations Between Freedom and Responsibility in the Evolution of Democratic Government For the successful conduct of a nation's affairs, we must have a certain degree of conformity between its political institutions and the moral character of its members. There is one set of virtues which fits men to be subjects of a monarchy; there is another very different set which is requisite for the citizens of a free commonwealth. We find a tendency among many people at the present day to claim the political rights of free citizens without accepting the moral obligations which go with them. But the attempt to assume the privileges of freedom and disclaim its responsibilities is fatal to the nation which tolerates it; and theories of law or schemes of social reform which ignore this ethical basis of democracy are likely to prove suicidal. It is the object of this book to show what this ethical basis of democracy is, how it has arisen, and what happens if we try to ignore it. How we understand, protect, and discharge our rights and responsibilities as citizens in a democratic society committed to the principle of political equality is intimately connected to the standards and behaviour of our media in general, and our news media in particular. However, the media does not just stand between the citizenry and their leaders, or indeed between citizens and each other. The media is often the site where individuals attempt to realise some of the most fundamental democratic liberties, including the right to free speech. Media Ethics, Free Speech, and the Requirements of Democracy explores the conflict between the rights that people exercise in, and through, the modern media and the responsibilities that accrue on account of its awesome and increasing power. The individual chapters—written by leading scholars from the US, UK, and Australia—address several recent events and controversial developments in the media, including Brexit, the rise of Trump, Lynton Crosby, Charlie Hebdo, dog-whistle politics, fake news, and political correctness. This much-needed philosophical treatment is a welcome addition to the recent literature in media ethics. It will be of interest to scholars across political and social philosophy, applied ethics, media and communication studies, and political science who are interested in the important issues surrounding the media and free speech and democracy.

"Rather than poorly performing schools, the current educational crisis is really about citizen responsibility. Citizens must insure that democratic practices are nurtured. This is perhaps most achievable in public schools. Therefore, citizens have a responsibility to support public schools and this book offers tools and knowledge to help citizens fulfill it"--

From the PREFATORY REMARKS Gentlemen Of Yale University: In delivering the lectures of 1907 on the responsibilities of citizenship, upon the foundation established by the late William Earl Dodge, I look back with pleasure to nearly forty years of friendship with Mr. Dodge, and to the example which his whole life gave of unselfish public spirit and of unremitting and intelligent effort for the welfare of his country and of his fellow-men. The establishment of this lectureship is but one of a multitude of acts which expressed his constant solicitude for the welfare of others and his grateful appreciation of all the blessings he owed to the just and equal laws, the liberty, and the opportunities of his country. His life was a better lesson in the responsibility of Christian citizenship than any lecturer can put into words; for he did what we write about and he proved what we assert. It is my purpose to speak to you of your responsibilities regarding the government of your country and to discuss: 1. The task inherited or assumed by members of the governing body in a democracy. 2. The function of political parties as agencies of the governing body. 3. The duties of the citizen as a member of a political party. 4. The grounds for encouragement.
