This work presents an engaging interdisciplinary study of the nature and scope of interpretation, one of the most important areas of inquiry in today's postmodern world. The three authors, all acknowledged experts in the field, bring the resources of the Bible, Christian tradition, and intellectual history to bear upon contemporary hermeneutical disputes. Representing a complete revision of The Responsibility of Hermeneutics (1985), this substantially expanded volume has been brought up to date with recent work in hermeneutics and sets forth an important new perspective that shifts the interpretive focus from the past to the promise of the future. Making use of the best insights from current theories about language, interpretation, and the nature of the self, The Promise of Hermeneutics demonstrates how an encounter with contemporary interpretive theory can deepen the church's own hermeneutical practices. The authors also show how the Christian faith can help move us beyond the many impasses created by postmodern thought.

A perennial issue in biblical studies relates to the Bible's plurality of voices, which often yields a plurality of interpretations. How can readers acknowledge this diversity while being responsible interpreters of Scripture? The contributors in this volume set out to address this question, opening up an engaging conversation that will encourage productive new horizons for biblical hermeneutics.

Few topics have received broader attention within contemporary philosophy than that of responsibility. Theodore George makes a novel case for a distinctive sense of responsibility at stake in the hermeneutical experiences of understanding and interpretation. He argues for the significance of this hermeneutical responsibility in the context of our relations with things, animals and others, as well as political solidarity and the formation of solidarities through the arts, literature and translation.

'Power and Responsibility in Biblical Interpretation' addresses the interpretive challenges now facing much biblical interpretation. Incorporating the methodologies of poststructuralism, postcolonialism, and liberation theology, the study presents a possible methodology which integrates scholarly and vernacular hermeneutics. The approach is based on the theories of Edward Said, adapting his concept of contrapuntal reading to the interpretation of 'Job'. The book sets this study in the broader context of a survey of current work in the field. The analysis of 'Job' examines the possibilities for dialogue between those interpretations that view suffering as a key theme in the book and those that do not. Interpretations of the 'Book of Job' are then compared to the psychology of suffering as experienced in various contexts today. The conclusion argues for pedagogical reform based upon the ethical and interpretive insights of contrapuntal hermeneutics.

How should the Word of God be interpreted and applied today? Does our modern culture affect how we read the Bible? Can certain passages be interpreted in different contexts and in different ways, all the while acknowledging that God speaks with a clear and consistent voice? These are the enduring challenges of hermeneutics. In this volume, no less than sixteen Reformed scholars from four different countries join together to tackle the hard questions that often arise when we busy ourselves with the weighty responsibility of interpreting Holy Scripture. As iron sharpens iron, so also these Reformed scholars challenge each other and their readers to ask not only how hermeneutics can be done, but ultimately, how it should be done so that God's Word of Truth may be handled correctly (2 Tim 2:15).

No issue now occupies contemporary evangelicals more than the role of culture in biblical interpretation. In Culture and Biblical Hermeneutics the author not only analyzes the current debate but also makes a significant contribution to it. This volume grapples with what the author calls the challenge that historical and cultural relativism poses to the hermeneutical process when applied to the authoritative Scripture. He accomplishes his goal admirably by exploring both the origin and the current state of biblical hermeneutics and by developing a biblical theology of hermeneutics and culture.

The fact that people read and understand texts in different ways is surely one of the main sources of Christian division, and one of the reasons Christians remain divided today. What is the role of culture in shaping our ways and means of interpretation? A certain diversity in interpretations is to be expected and celebrated. But can there be agreed criteria for setting the limits to diversity? Could there be guidelines for interpreting texts and symbols ecumenically, in a way that bridges some of our confessional and cultural differences? Questions such as these have formed the basis of the work of the World Council of Church's Faith and Order commission in the area of ecumenical hermeneutics. This book brings together the text of Faith and Order's study process (A Treasure in Earthen Vessels) as well as several essays contributed along the way by participants from different confessional and regional backgrounds These essays speak to the complexity and depth of 'the hermeneutical problem' in the ecumenical task, offering insights, raising still further questions, and laying the ground for further work.

Meaning, Responsibility and Politics: Hermeneutical Essays The author of the Meaning, Responsibility, and Politics: Hermeneutical Essays examines the mean-ing of human beings in the Western philosophical tradition. As a one-of-a-kind social phenomenon that strives to achieve an acceptable compromise between being and consciousness, meaning and understanding are given a great deal of attention. It is this hermeneutical ideal of discovering meaning in the nature of morality and politics that distin-guishes some of the most important contemporary debates on the nature of being (including debates on the nature of language and man), which have their origins in the philosophy of language and can be applied to a wide range of topics. In addition, the author argues that in Western thought, reason, liberty, equality, and the ability of nature to regulate itself have all been deemed to be subject to evaluation. As a result, the democratic constitutional state, culture, and community have all been established in the educational apparatus in the manner that has been desired fora long time by the people of the nation. The concepts of law and human rights, to be sure, are deeply ingrained in contemporary political theory and ethical reflec-tion, as is the concept of justice. In order to comprehend Enlightenment ethics, one must first understand individual autonomy as well as a rational view of the universe and of man. Since human autonomy and rational comprehension are highly valued, the concept of meaning is taken to be ontological and extended to include considera-tions of ethics and politics.
