The Return Of Proserpina written by Sarah Spence and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-01-03 with History categories.
"In this book, Sarah Spence explores the role of Sicily in the European imagination through the myth of Proserpina, who was abducted by the god of the underworld from the same Mediterranean island. Drawing on the author's training in both classics and medieval studies, the book explores how mythic narrative reflects ideas about ancient and medieval empires and engages with debates about the nature of the classical tradition as it evolved during the Middle Ages. Spence argues that the narrative structure of the Proserpina myth, the history of Sicily, and ideas about empire come to reflect, refract, and refine one another through literature, including works by Cicero, Vergil, Ovid, Claudian, and Dante. More broadly, Spence considers the way in which literature offers a space for political deliberation and imagination. While Roman poets focus on Proserpina's abduction as a means for discussing the problems of imperial expansion, for example, high medieval renderings of the myth-invoked in discussions of a new Christian empire shaped by the Crusades-instead focus on the loss of Proserpina, her eventual return, and the necessary negotiations her return involves. In this way, the tale of Proserpina and the history of Sicily trace the changing needs and understandings of empire, literature, and the complicated links between the two"--

Edward Armitage Ra written by Jill R Armitage and has been published by Troubador Publishing Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-18 with Art categories.
Edward Armitage was a highly-esteemed 19th century artist who lived and worked at a time when the social fabric of Britain was being transformed by the Industrial Revolution and attitudes towards art were changing in favour of genres more appealing to the emerging middle classes. Coinciding with the 2017 bicentenary of Armitage’s birth, the book is based on Jill Armitage’s extensive research into her relative’s life and work. Born in 1817 to a family of wealthy northern industrialists, Edward Armitage trained in Bohemian Paris before making his name in Britain as one of the artists chosen to redecorate the new Houses of Parliament. He was one of the first artists to make the long journey to the Crimea during the war against Russia, and one of the first to include recent archaeological discoveries in his paintings. He was appointed Professor and Lecturer on Painting at the Royal Academy in 1875, where his outspoken views were sometimes controversial. But as Armitage grew older, his serious, French style of painting became increasingly unfashionable. In this well-illustrated biography, Jill provides the first comprehensive account of Armitage’s life and work, with detailed references to the social, historical and cultural context in which he lived. The book will appeal to fans of Armitage’s paintings, as well as those with an interest in art history and the Victorian era.

Return to Troy presents essays by American and European classical scholars on the Director’s Cut of Troy, a Hollywood film inspired by Homer’s Iliad. The book addresses major topics that are important for any twenty-first century representation of ancient Greek myth and literature in the visual media, not only in regard to Troy: the portrayals of gods, heroes, and women; director Wolfgang Petersen’s epic technique; anachronisms and supposed mistakes; the fall of Troy in classical literature and on screen; and the place of the Iliad in modern popular culture. Unique features are an interview with the director, a report on the complex filming process by his personal assistant, and rare photographs taken during the original production of Troy.

The Life And Twelve Note Music Of Nikos Skalkottas written by Eva Mantzourani and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-03 with Music categories.
Nikos Skalkottas is perhaps the last great 'undiscovered' composer of the twentieth century. In the 1920s he was a promising young violinist and composer in Berlin, and a student of Schoenberg, who included him among his most gifted pupils. It was only after his return to Greece in 1933 that Skalkottas became an anonymous and obscure figure, working in complete isolation until his death in 1949. Most of his works remained unpublished and unperformed during his lifetime, and although he is largely known for his folkloristic tonal pieces, Skalkottas in fact concentrated predominantly on developing an idiosyncratic dodecaphonic musical language. Eva Mantzourani provides here a comprehensive study of this fascinating yet under-researched composer. The book, lavishly illustrated with musical examples, is divided into three parts. Part I comprises a critical biography that, by drawing extensively on his letters and other writings, reappraises the image of Skalkottas with which we are often presented. The main focus of the book, however, is on Skalkottas's twelve-note compositional processes, since these characterize the majority of his output, and are neither well-known nor fully understood. Part II presents the structural and technical features of his twelve-note technique, particularly the different types of sets and their manipulation, and his approach to musical forms. Part III consists of analytical case studies of several works, presented chronologically, which thus provide a diachronic framework within which Skalkottas's dodecaphonic compositional development can be more effectively viewed. This book underlines Nikos Skalkottas's importance as a composer with a distinctive artistic personality, whose work contributed to the development of twelve-note compositional practice, and who deserves a more significant position within the Western art music canon than that to which he is often assigned.
