The Reuniting Of Europe written by José I. Torreblanca and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-20 with Political Science categories.

This title was first published in 2001: In 1989, central and Eastern European countries broke free form the Soviet Union and looked upon the European Community to support their 'return to Europe'. Some years later, leaders of the European Community, meeting in Copenhagen in June 1993, endorsed for the first time the membership aspirations of the recently democratized countries of Central and Eastern Europe. This insightful text examines the negotiations, debates, tensions and contradictions behind the process of approximation between the two halves of Europe, both within the EC itself as well as between the EC and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The extensive consultation of unpublished internal documents, and a theoretically relevant and well-written analysis, ensures that this book is an indispensable resource for students and researchers of EC/EU relations with Central and Eastern Europe.

Europe Since 1945 written by Mary Fulbrook and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Europe categories.

Mary Fulbrook's Introduction to this splendid concluding volume in The Short Oxford History of Europe begins with a vivid contrast, setting the struggle for survival in a devastated rubble-strewn street of East Berlin in 1945 against the same location in the reunited city at the end of thecentury, unrecognizable in its gleaming, confident, cosmopolitan affluence. The book brings home the extraordinary waves of transformation that have washed across Europe in the second half of the twentieth century, sketching out the major general patterns of this change, and exploring some of thelocal themes and variations in different parts of Europe. The result is both illuminating and engrossing: a must for students of contemporary history, politics, and European studies, it also offers immense rewards to any reader interested in the roots, and fruits, of the post-war Europeanrenaissance.

Ukraine And Europe written by Marko Bojcun and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with History categories.

The book examines the development of relations between Ukraine and Europe since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. It focuses on two broad areas: Ukraine's ties with the European Union, where the dominant issues have been investment, trade and transition to the market, and its membership in the Council of Europe, which has been preoccupied with problems of democratic government, criminal justice and human rights. Examining the broad economic and political trends of the past decade, Marko Bojcun's study attempts to explain why the relations between Ukraine and these major European institutions have proved so difficult to cement.

European Union Enlargement written by Thomas Mehlhausen and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-11 with Political Science categories.

The continuous expansion of the European Union has transformed its very own self-conception. While Eastern enlargement was widely celebrated as the ‘reuniting of Europe’, the sheer number of applicants, their low economic development and the need for new states to transform in accordance with EU values required considerable adjustments to the EU’s self-image. By examining the European Council’s contentious approval of the Mediterranean and Central and Eastern European countries in the 1970s and 1990s, this book investigates why the European Union enlarges. Based on new and hitherto not analysed data, it introduces the concept of ‘anomie’ to the discourse and, in doing so, makes a timely contribution to the literature of constitutional politics and enlargement of the European Union. This text will be of key interest to scholars and students of the European Union, area studies (European studies, central and east European studies, Mediterranean studies) and more broadly comparative politics and constitutional politics.

Uniting Of Europe written by Ernst B. Haas and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-15 with POLITICAL SCIENCE categories.

The University of Notre Dame Press is pleased to bring Ernst Haas's classic work on European integration, The Uniting of Europe, back into print. First published in 1958 and last printed in 1968, this seminal volume is the starting point for anyone interested in the pre-history of the European Union. Haas uses the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) as a case study of the community formation processes that occur across traditional national and state boundaries. Haas points to the ECSC as an example of an organization with the "power to redirect the loyalties and expectations of political actors." In this pathbreaking book Haas contends that, based on his observations of the actual integration process, the idea of a "united Europe" took root in the years immediately following World War II. His careful and rigorous analysis tracks the development of the ECSC, including, in his 1968 preface, a discussion of the eventual loss of the individual identity of the ECSC through its absorption into the new European Community. Featuring a new introduction by Haas analyzing the impact of his book over time, as well as an updated bibliography, The Uniting of Europe is a must-have for political scientists and historians of modern and contemporary Europe. This book is the inaugural volume of Notre Dame's new Contemporary European Politics and Society Series.

New Europe Old Values written by Nada Bodiroga-Vukobrat and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-17 with Law categories.

This book explores the reactions to Europeanization and globalization in times of economic distress, including the transformation of European values in national legal cultures. The authors explore how European values, tradition and new legal challenges interconnect and dictate the paths of transition between old and new Europe. The first chapter starts with a question: can Roman Legal Tradition play a role of identity factor towards a New Europe? Can it be considered as a general value identifying new Europe, built on a minimum core of principles – persona, dominum, obligation, contract and inheritance – composing the whole European private law tradition? Subsequent chapters attempt to provide possible responses to the question: what is Europe today? The answers diverge, depending on the research area. The inherent dichotomy of human rights protection in Europe and the concept of ‘one law, one court’ are investigated in the second chapter, whereas the third chapter focuses on asylum and the interrelation and interdependence of the Court of Justice of the EU and the European Court of Human Rights. The next three chapters concentrate on matters of equal treatment and non-discrimination. The first contribution in this part reflects on the crisis and methodological and conceptual issues faced by modern anti-discrimination law. It is followed by a specific analysis of the empowerment of women or gender-balancing in company boards. The third contribution reveals the impact of the Croatian anti-discrimination law on private law relations. The next chapter deals with the issue of social rights in Croatia and the method of their regulation in the context of the new European values. The immense challenges posed by the market integration imperative and democratic transition have brought about different reactions in the national legal systems and legal cultures of both old and new Member States. As such, Europe has effectively been reunited, but what about the convergence of national legal cultures? This is the focal point of the remaining chapters, which focus on various issues, from internal market, competition law, consumer welfare, liberalization of network industries to the EU capital market. The magnitude of EU activity in these areas offers conclusive evidence that old and new paradigms are evolving and shaping the future of the EU.

Germany Europe And The Persistence Of Nations written by Stephen Wood and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-06-30 with Europe categories.

Published in 1998, this book is an articulate and densely documented account of political, cultural and historical forces and tensions involved in contemporary European integration; most especially concerning Germany. In doing so it provides an effective fusion of a vast array of material from what are normally separate disciplines. The book investigates contemporary resonances of identifications and conceptions of political boundaries that appeared in Europe in the late eighteenth and nineteenth century. It argues that within a 'supranationalising' Europe, national identity and nationalism have not disappeared as cultural and political phenomena. Rather they persist and manifest themselves in variable forms at popular and elite levels. This is the basis for Europe's condition of far from completed unity, at the centre of which is now a reunited Germany, more sure of itself but less sure of the world around it.
