My journey with the Tao Te Ching has been one of profound exploration and deep contemplation. The text, with its enigmatic and timeless wisdom, has long been a guide for those seeking understanding of the Tao and the nature of existence. In my quest to bring the essence of these ancient teachings to a broader audience, I embarked upon an ambitious project: to transcribe each of the 81 chapters of the Tao Te Ching into rhyming verses. The idea behind this endeavour was born from a contemplation of the Tao itself, which flows effortlessly like a great river, meandering and intertwining with the landscape of our lives. In much the same way, the art of rhyme introduces a rhythmic harmony to words, creating a flow that is both pleasing to the ear and soothing to the soul. Rhyming, in its essence, captures the natural cadence found in the world around us – the chirping of birds, the rustling of leaves, and the gentle lapping of waves. It reflects the Taoist principle of living in harmony with the natural world. Moreover, the Tao Te Ching, while profound and insightful, can be cryptic and challenging for many to penetrate. By transforming its teachings into rhyming verses, I sought to imbue them with a certain accessibility and charm. Rhyme has a unique way of lodging itself in the memory, allowing the wisdom of the Tao to resonate within the mind long after the words have been read. This poetic approach serves to demystify the Tao Te Ching, making its profound teachings more approachable and relatable. In this creative process, I endeavoured to maintain the integrity and depth of the original text, while also infusing it with a new life. Each verse was crafted with great care, ensuring that the essence of the teachings was not lost in the pursuit of rhyme. The result is a collection that is both a homage to the ancient wisdom of the Tao Te Ching and a fresh interpretation for the modern seeker. This rhyming rendition of the Tao Te Ching invites readers on a lyrical journey through the realms of philosophy, spirituality, and self-reflection. It is my hope that through these verses, the timeless wisdom of the Tao becomes a constant companion in their quest for inner peace and understanding. In the spirit of the Tao, these rhymes are not just words to be read, but a path to be walked, a dance to be danced, in the eternal flow of the universe.

Tao Te Ching is the 2,500 years old source to Taoism, written by the legendary Taoist philosopher Lao Tzu. In 81 short chapters, he presented the world according to Tao, the Way, and how mankind should adapt to it. The book has become one of the foremost world classics of wisdom - maybe even more relevant today, than it was to Lao Tzu's contemporaries. This translation of the text focuses on the clarity and simplicity by which Lao Tzu expresses his fascinating cosmology and profound ethics. Each chapter is thoroughly explained, also regarding how this old wisdom can be understood and applied today. Stefan Stenudd is a Swedish writer of both fiction and non-fiction. As a historian of ideas, he studies the thought patterns in creation myths around the world. He is also a high-grade instructor of the peaceful martial art aikido, which he has practiced for almost 40 years.

San Francisco and the Long 60s tells the fascinating story of the legacy of popular music in San Francisco between the years 1965-69. It is also a chronicle of the impact this brief cultural flowering has continued to have in the city – and more widely in American culture – right up to the present day. The aim of San Francisco and the Long 60s is to question the standard historical narrative of the time, situating the local popular music of the 1960s in the city's contemporary artistic and literary cultures: at once visionary and hallucinatory, experimental and traditional, singular and universal. These qualities defined the aesthetic experience of the local culture in the 1960s, and continue to inform the cultural and social life of the Bay Area even fifty years later. The brief period 1965-69 marks the emergence of the psychedelic counterculture in the Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood, the development of a local musical 'sound' into a mainstream international 'style', the mythologizing of the Haight-Ashbury as the destination for 'seekers' in the Summer of Love, and the ultimate dispersal of the original hippie community to outlying counties in the greater Bay Area and beyond. San Francisco and the Long 60s charts this period with the references to received historical accounts of the time, the musical, visual and literary communications from the counterculture, and retrospective glances from members of the 1960s Haight community via extensive first-hand interviews. During the Spring-Autumn period (722–420 BCE) and the time of the Warring States (480–222 CE), China was in great turmoil. Intellectuals and social reformers sifted through their wisdom and knowledge of China’s experiences up to then, attempting to find a solution to their situation. The Tao Te Ching, one of the foremost products of the era, is a metaphysical book, a source of the highest political thought. Many readers have found in it representations of the highest ideals of human endeavors. Yet given its likely oral origin and the technological limitations of its early textual transmission, the Tao Te Ching raises numerous questions related to authorship, date of origin, internal organization, textual coherence, and editorial history. Of the scores of translations of the Tao Te Ching, the great majority are based on the edition prepared by the third-century scholar Wang Pi. Wang’s profound commentary is itself a deeply influential text in the development of Taoist thought. Paul Lin presents the commentary, otherwise unavailable in English, in the form of footnotes accompanying his meticulous rendition of the Taoist classic.

“A magisterial book” of nearly five hundred poems from some of history’s greatest Chinese poets, translated and edited by a renowned poet and scholar (New Republic). The Chinese poetic tradition is the largest and longest continuous tradition in world literature. This rich and far-reaching anthology of nearly five hundred poems provides a comprehensive account of its first three millennia (1500 BCE to 1200 CE), the period during which virtually all its landmark developments took place. Unlike earlier anthologies of Chinese poetry, Hinton’s book focuses on a relatively small number of poets, providing selections that are large enough to re-create each as a fully realized and unique voice. New introductions to each poet’s work provide a readable history, told for the first time as a series of poetic innovations forged by a series of master poets. “David Hinton has . . . lured into English a new manner of hearing the great poets of that long glory of China’s classical age. His achievement is another echo of the original, and a gift to our language.” —W. S. Merwin
