Excerpt from Analysis of the Evolution of Musical Form The general drift of this theory of music has already been indicated in The Rhythmic Conception of Music. The object of the present volume may be briefly stated to be the application of the evolutionary principle to practical music, the essential motive power of which is to be found in rhythm. By this means it is possible to produce an analysis which, as promised in the former volume, shall weld all the various parts of musical education into one consistent and logical whole. The theory has arisen not from abstract ideas, but out of the study of music. It is not so much a theory about music as an endeavour to translate into the terms of the intellect the form of the impressions made upon the musical imagination - in short, to hold the mirror up to Music. It is hoped that those who have themselves the intuitive knowledge will recognise the likeness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Rhythm of Modern Music IN this book I have endeavoured to deal with the Rhythm of Modern Music in its aesthetic aspect, rather than as an element of formal construction. In the present highly developed condition of musical art, the power of influencing the mind through an infinite variety of rhythmical devices in combination with melody is not perhaps generally recognised, and the capabilities of Rhythm, although Well known to composers, are not invariably made full use of by performers, except by those of the first rank, or those who have paid special attention to this element of music. Excerpt from Rhythm, Music and Education Twenty-five years ago I made my debut in pedagogy, as Professor of Harmony at the Conservatoire of Geneva. After the first few lessons, I noticed that the ears of my pupils were not able to appreciate the chords which they had to write, and I concluded that the flaw in the conventional method of training is that pupils are not given experience of chords at the beginning of their studies - when brain and body are developing along parallel lines, the one constantly communicating its impressions and sensations to the other - but that this experience is withheld until the time arrives to express the results in writing. Accordingly I decided to precede my lessons in written harmony by special exercises of a physiological nature aimed at developing the hearing faculties, and I was not long in discovering that, while with older students acoustic sensations were hindered by futile intellectual preconceptions, children appreciated them quite spontaneously, proceeding in due course quite naturally to their analysis. Excerpt from A Theory of Pure Design: Harmony, Balance, Rhythm I am giving this book to the Public with great reluctance. Though I have had it in mind for many years and have put no end of thought and work into it, it seems to me inadequate and unsatisfactory. It will hardly be published before I shall discover in it errors both of omission and commission. The book presents a new definition of principles, a new association of ideas. It is inconceivable that this, my first published statement, should be either consistent or complete. It will be a long time, I am sure, before it can be brought to a satisfactory shape. It is simply the best statement that I can make at this time. One reason, perhaps my best reason, for publishing this Theory, before it is completely worked out.
