Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Other, grade: 1,3, University of Bremen, language: English, abstract: The overall research question that this paper intends to answer is the following: How do Hollywood movies such as "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" represent people of color, and how does that influence our perception of reality? At the end of the paper, this question will be answered, and certain solutions will be discussed. To exemplary analyze the under-representation of people of color and how they are stereotyped in Hollywood movies, a case study on "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" will be conducted. The paper will analyze certain scenes in which actors of color are involved, and will then examine how they are represented in comparison to Caucasian actors. Furthermore, the paper gives some more background information about the current debate focussing on the non-diversity of the Academy Awards - better known as Oscars - and about casting practices that are performed by big Hollywood studios. In addition to that, it will present the most common stereotypes in which people of color are depicted. The Academy Awards - most commonly known as 'Oscars' - are heavily criticized for their lack of diversity. In the year 2016, for the second time in a row, the Academy's 93 percent white membership had only nominated white actors for the respective awards. In addition to that, it has now been 15 years ago that the last actor/actress of color has won an Academy Award for best the best leading role. The under-representation of people of color in movies and the board's racist electoral behavior becomes even clearer when focussing on actresses of color.

Representations Of Finite Groups written by Hirosi Nagao and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-10 with Mathematics categories.

Representations of Finite Groups provides an account of the fundamentals of ordinary and modular representations. This book discusses the fundamental theory of complex representations of finite groups. Organized into five chapters, this book begins with an overview of the basic facts about rings and modules. This text then provides the theory of algebras, including theories of simple algebras, Frobenius algebras, crossed products, and Schur indices with representation-theoretic versions of them. Other chapters include a survey of the fundamental theory of modular representations, with emphasis on Brauer characters. This book discusses as well the module-theoretic representation theory due to Green and includes some topics such as Burry–Carlson's theorem and Scott modules. The final chapter deals with the fundamental results of Brauer on blocks and Fong's theory of covering, and includes some approaches to them. This book is a valuable resource for readers who are interested in the various approaches to the study of the representations of groups.

This volume is dedicated to the memory of the Soviet mathematician S. D. Berman (1922-1987). Berman's work - for the most part in representation theory, group rings, and coding theory - is discussed here in a number of review articles. Among the topics covered are Berman's achievements in coding theory, including his pioneering work on abelian codes and his results on the theory of threshold functions. Also discussed are his contributions to the representation theory of groups over fields, his work on integral representations of groups, his accomplishments in infinite abelian group rings, and his fundamental results on units in integral group rings. In addition, there are 22 research articles written by an international group of researchers in areas of Berman's major interest.

A polynomial identity for an algebra (or a ring) A A is a polynomial in noncommutative variables that vanishes under any evaluation in A A. An algebra satisfying a nontrivial polynomial identity is called a PI algebra, and this is the main object of study in this book, which can be used by graduate students and researchers alike. The book is divided into four parts. Part 1 contains foundational material on representation theory and noncommutative algebra. In addition to setting the stage for the rest of the book, this part can be used for an introductory course in noncommutative algebra. An expert reader may use Part 1 as reference and start with the main topics in the remaining parts. Part 2 discusses the combinatorial aspects of the theory, the growth theorem, and Shirshov's bases. Here methods of representation theory of the symmetric group play a major role. Part 3 contains the main body of structure theorems for PI algebras, theorems of Kaplansky and Posner, the theory of central polynomials, M. Artin's theorem on Azumaya algebras, and the geometric part on the variety of semisimple representations, including the foundations of the theory of Cayley–Hamilton algebras. Part 4 is devoted first to the proof of the theorem of Razmyslov, Kemer, and Braun on the nilpotency of the nil radical for finitely generated PI algebras over Noetherian rings, then to the theory of Kemer and the Specht problem. Finally, the authors discuss PI exponent and codimension growth. This part uses some nontrivial analytic tools coming from probability theory. The appendix presents the counterexamples of Golod and Shafarevich to the Burnside problem.

This graduate-level text provides a thorough grounding in the representation theory of finite groups over fields and rings. The book provides a balanced and comprehensive account of the subject, detailing the methods needed to analyze representations that arise in many areas of mathematics. Key topics include the construction and use of character tables, the role of induction and restriction, projective and simple modules for group algebras, indecomposable representations, Brauer characters, and block theory. This classroom-tested text provides motivation through a large number of worked examples, with exercises at the end of each chapter that test the reader's knowledge, provide further examples and practice, and include results not proven in the text. Prerequisites include a graduate course in abstract algebra, and familiarity with the properties of groups, rings, field extensions, and linear algebra.
