This thesis aims to fill a significant gap in Tolkien criticism regarding the author’s employment of voice in his legendarium. The voice, a complex and often metaphorized concept, has many flexible, versatile components such as timbre, expressiveness, and the conveyance, and often manipulation, of verbalized language. For the purposes of this study, I draw from acoustic ecology to distinguish between “language”—the content of a spoken communication—and “voice”—the medium of that speech. The first chapter explores the ways in which the “grain” of the voice signifies character identity in Tolkien’s works and how, in turn, vocal expression is a power to be mastered in Middle-earth. The second chapter, then, investigates how exile and liminality in Middle-earth perpetuate splintered, hybrid identities that are both mended and challenged by culturally various voices. On the one hand, speech and music offer mortals a means of sharing stories and engaging in provisional homemaking, thus facilitating the preservation of cultural identity. On the other hand, they provide, primarily in the case of immortals, a sense of identity that is developed through the sharing of sound. Finally, in an especially critical sense, speech and music also serve to express and heal the trauma of individuals living in between mortality and immortality—those classified as wholly “Other,” even among fellow exiles, as exhibited through the cases of Ring-bearers and Ents.
