Excerpt from The Rise and Fall of Papacy Thus having plodded through the whole round of literature and scholastic theology, With a reference to its highest and most legitimate application having weighed its worth, and ascertained its tendencies and having, above all, imbibed that spirit of love and charity which he was so desirous to cultivate, he finally returned with redoubled affection to that source of light and wisdom in which alone the inquiring soul can be at rest, and the most capacious intellect be filled to overflowing. His language on this subject is full of interest and meaning: But when I had taken all this pains, and run round in this mental survey of learning, I began not only to tire and grow uneasy, but disrelish, and in some sort nauseate, all human writings. I found that there was no end in reading as well as in writing books, and that much study was a weariness to the esh - nay, that vanity and vexation of spirit were themselves entailed upon this, as well as upon all other things that the children of Adam busied themselves about. I resolved, there fore, to betake myself for the future to the study of the Sacred Volume alone, as my main business, and to make no other use of other books than as they might become subservient to me in the understanding and improvement of the same. For I may say truly, with David, that I easily see the end of all human perfection, but that the law of God was exceeding broad, as appearing still greater and greater the more it was searched into and understood. Excerpt from The Rise of the Papacy, A. D. 385 461 II. To this earlier period I shall, however, return again, and hope at no distant date to send forth a companion volume to the present, which will link on the story here told with the earliest Christian times. It will be observed that, in the course of the narrative, I sometimes speak Of the Eastern or the Western Empire. This I do solely as a matter of convenience; and the use of the' ex pression does not imply that I have overlooked the fact that, strictly speaking, there were not two Empires, and that at all events in theory the Empire was one and indivisible, though for ad ministrative and executive purposes it consisted of two divisions This point should not be overlooked by any one desirous of obtaining a just appreciation of the facts of the case. Excerpt from The Growth of the Temporal Power of the Papacy: A Historical Review With Observations Upon the Council of the Vatican The rapid march of events in connection with the so-called (ecumenical Council might induce me to modify some of the Opinions expressed respecting this remarkable phenomenon; but where the scene changes so unexpectedly from day to day, I have felt it imprudent to postpone the publication for the sake of a more confident exposition of what is, after all, a subsidiary inci dent of my narrative. The question of the Fall of the Papacy is indeed one of the very deepest import; but though it may be precipitated by the event which Pope Pius IX believes ordained of God for its full development and glory, the real causes of its decay have been long in operation, and can neither be eradicated nor greatly aggravated by the foregone conclusions of an assem bly, however august, without freedom of debate or power of administration, and sworn to ratify the decisions of him who alone receives the plenitude of power neither from the Apostles, nor from Councils, but immediately from Christ!'
