Excerpt from The Rise and Progress of the English Constitution In 1848 I prepared and published a small pamphlet, called "The d104-Book of the Constitution," in which were arranged the texts of Magna Carta, the Petition of Right, and the Bill of Rights, with historical comments, and with remarks on the People's Charter and other political topics of that year. Independently of its politics, that pamphlet has been found useful as an historical compilation; but the extent to which its latter pages were occupied with political discussions, made me unwilling either to employ it myself or to see it employed by others in education. I do not wish to disavow any of the opinions which I expressed in it, but a teacher of History has no right to avail himself of the position in which he stands towards his pupils, for the purpose of training up broods of young Tories, Whigs, or Radicals, according to his own party predilections. I therefore intended to prepare an edition of that little treatise, which should deal only with the Past, and in which the spirit of party pamphlet should be entirely got rid of. Excerpt from The History of the English Constitution, Vol. 1 of 2 The History of the Constitution of England has hitherto only been written with regard to the Middle Ages, and separate centuries since the Reformation. In venturing to draw a picture of the thousand years' Constitutional History of such a nation, I must necessarily begin with an apology in order to explain the shortcomings and inequalities of my work, and in some measure to justify them in the eyes of the benevolent reader. Excerpt from The Rise and Progress of the English Commonwealth, Vol. 1 of 2: Anglo-Saxon Period; Containing the Anglo-Saxon Policy, and the Institutions Arising Out of Laws and Usages Which Prevailed Before the Conquest So many works of deserved and established reputation, treating upon the antiquities of the Constitution, are already before the public, that some apology seems needed for adding another to their number. I must therefore excuse myself by the observation, that an attempt is here made, however imperfectly, to supply a chasm in our historical literature. Excerpt from A Popular Sketch of the Origin and Development of the English Constitution, Vol. 2: From the Earliest Period to the Present Time; From the Accession of James I. To the Present Period The concluding chapter on the Law of Property and Jurisprudence generally, will naturally be omitted by most readers of the preceding pages. But while the criticism of professional brethren is respectfully deprecated, at so humble an attempt to popularise a peculiarly technical subject; it is yet submitted in recommendation of these remarks to the general reader, that no political view of the history of a country would be complete without some idea of the modes, in which private rights were acquired, held, and defended. While it might be added that in no other book at present in print could be found in so compendious a form the pith of the subtle learning of the Conveyancer together with a clear and popular view of the existing jurisdiction of our several Courts, and the real or intended improve ments generally passing under the name of Law Reform.
