This book analyses the criminalisation of the possession of extreme pornography through ss 63-68 of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008. This book explores current human rights controversies arising in UK law, in the light of the way such matters have been dealt with in Canada. Canada's Charter of Rights predates the United Kingdom's Human Rights Act by some 20 years, and in the 40 years of the Charter's existence, Canada's Supreme Court has produced an increasingly sophisticated body of public law jurisprudence. In its judgments, it has addressed broad questions of constitutional principle relating to such matters as the meaning of proportionality, the 'horizontal' impact of human rights norms, and the proper role of judicial 'dereference' to legislative decision-making. The court has also considered, more narrowly, specific issues of political controversy such as assisted dying, voting rights for prisoners, the wearing of religious symbols, parental control of their children's upbringing, the law regulating libel actions brought by politicians, pornography and labour rights. All of these issues are discussed in the book. The contributions to this volume provide detailed analyses of such broad and narrow matters in a comparative perspective, and suggest that the United Kingdom's public law jurisprudence and scholarship might benefit substantially from a closer engagement with their Canadian counterparts.

Develops a novel characterization of the pornographic as a cultural concept. This original contribution to porn studies aims to interrogate previously untheorized changes in contemporary understandings of the pornographic. Helen Hester argues that the words porn and pornographic are currently being applied to an ever-expanding range of material and that this change in language usage reflects a wider shift in perception. She suggests that we are witnessing a seemingly paradoxical move away from sex within contemporary understandings of porn, as a range of other factors come to influence the concept. Using examples from media, literature, and culture, and discussing the rise of notions such as torture porn and misery porn, Hesters argument ranges from sexually explicit German novels and British policy documents to a discussion of the differences between European and American editions of pornographic films. She concludes that four factors in particulartransgression, intensity, prurience, and authenticitycan be seen to influence the way that we think about porn.

The theoretical framework for the analysis lies upon the concept of wave theory. The main question that this book examines is whether far-right terrorism constitutes a new wave of global terrorism. This book is for scholars as well as practitioners in the counter-terrorism (CT) and the prevention/countering violent extremism (PCVE) field.
