This edited volume presents new research on Russian-Asian connections by historians, art historians, literary scholars, and linguists. Of particular interest are imagined communities, social networks, and the legacy of colonialism in this important arena of global exchanges within the imperial, Soviet, and post-Soviet eras. Individual chapters investigate how Russians imagined Asia and its inhabitants, how these different populations interacted across political and cultural divides, and how people in Siberia, China, and other parts of Asia reacted to Russian imperialism, both in its formal and informal manifestations. A key strength of this volume is its interdisciplinary approach to the topic, challenging readers to synthesize multiple analytical lenses to better understand the multivalent connections binding Russia and Asia together.

A brilliant analysis of Putin and the key role a resurgent Russia has to play in world affairs. When the Soviet Union collapsed, the world was left wondering about its destiny. Russia is still an enormous power with a population exceeding 140 million, immense military resources and giant energy reserves - in short, a vast land full of promise and opportunity. Russia has the potential to be a force of stability or a force of turmoil, but when it comes to global affairs, can she be persuaded to join the world order? Will yesterday's revolutionary power become tomorrow's stabilizer? Professor Stuermer's authoritative and timely account considers a Russia going through a defining phase after the departure of Vladimir Putin. History is on the move: we face an open and challenging future in which Russia, for better or for worse, will play a key role.

In 2012, Russia assumes the Chairmanship of APEC, and is keen to build on its memberships of both East Asia Summit (EAS) and the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). Russia is geographically and historically part of Asia and the Asia Pacific, and has been a dialogue partner of ASEAN since 1996. Still, the obstacles of distance and languages have led ASEAN member states and Russia to know and interact little between both sides. As growth poles in the world economy, there is much benefit in greater interaction between their rich economies. To commemorate the 15th Anniversary of the Russia-ASEAN dialogue partnership in 2011, the ASEAN Studies Centre at ISEAS and its counterpart from MGIMO-University, Moscow co-organized a two-day conference that year, in which papers were presented offering perspectives from Russia and the ten ASEAN member states. Representatives from academia, and the public and private sectors offered insights on topics including geopolitics, bilateral relations, business and economics, and culture and education. This is a timely book that affords the reader insights into where ASEAN-Russia relations currently stand and suggests how they can improve and move forward.

Issues concerning relations between Russia and Central Asia in the geostrategic and economic realms are well-known. Much has been said about the rapprochement between these countries, which has been very visible since 2000 and even more pronounced since 2005, as it undermines the power of influence the United States and Europe have in the region. But very little is known about the specific place that Central Asia occupies in Russian political and intellectual life. However, with the rise of nationalism and xenophobia in Russian society, a detailed analysis is warranted of the opinions held by the various nationalist currents in relation to Central Asia. For many years, a profound reordering of the Russian political scene has been underway: the so-called liberal currents have been marginalized, while the nationalist parties have enjoyed a rapid rise.

The history of Russia is often considered as if that immense country had always been an isolated continent. However, at the time of its rise as a nation, it was politically a province of the Mongol Empire, whose capital was in Central Asia; and ecclesiastically, it was a dependency of the Orthodox Patriarchate of Constantinople, or Byzantium. This book describes the role of Byzantine (predominantly ecclesiastical) diplomacy in the emergence of Moscow as the capital of Russia in the fourteenth century, and the cultural, religious and political ties which connected the Northern periphery of the Byzantine Orthodox 'Commonwealth' with its centre in Constantinople. After 1370, the religious and monastic revival in Byzantium and the weakening of Mongol power provided an orientation to the policies of the Orthodox church in Russia: towards supra-national unity, spiritual and artistic achievements, and political reconciliation between principalities.

With the rise of India and China, the rest of Asia is feeling the great impact of socio-economic changes. However, Russia's interaction with ASEAN is limited to dialogue between both parties. This book sets out to help explain these anomalies and puzzles, by examining the state of relations between Russia and selected individual ASEAN countries.

In an era of great changes and much uncertainty, such as the revival of an active Russia, buoyed by increasing energy wealth, a U.S. mired in Iraq and Afghanistan, rising China and India, as well as Japan moving towards normalization, ASEAN needs to closely monitor great power trends and thinking. This timely and topical book provides insights into various issues high on the regional agenda. The rise of China is closely observed in three chapters in this book. On Russia-ASEAN relations, three authors offer their perspectives. Energy issues are scrutinized. The ongoing efforts to build an East Asian Community are analysed. At a time when Russia has an active profile in Southeast Asia with its arms sales to Indonesia and its nuclear technology assistance to Myanmar, this book offers useful and authoritative discourses on its relations with ASEAN, building on an earlier volume published by ISEAS.
