As a young girl, Willow watched her mother leave their home in Washington State in a literal blaze of glory: she set the mattress of her cheating husband on fire in her driveway, roasting marshmallow peeps and hot dogs before the fire department arrived. And with that, she and Willow set off to New Mexico, to a new life, to a world of arroyos and canyons bordering an Apache reservation. Willow was devastated. Her eccentric mother believed in this new life and set about starting a winery and goat ranch. But for Willow, it meant initially being bullied and feeling like an outsider. Today, as a grown woman, Willow much prefers Los Angeles and her job as a studio musician. But things tend to happen in threes: her mother dies, her boyfriend dumps her, and Willow discovers she is pregnant. The DeVine Winery and Goat Ranch is all she has left, even if it is in financial straits and unmanageable back taxes. There is something, though, about the call of “home.” She's surprised to find that her Apache best friend Darrel along with the rest of the community seems to think she belongs far more than she ever thought she did. Can Willow redefine what home means for her, and can she make a go of the legacy her mother left behind? Told with Kaya McLaren’s humor and heart, The Road to Enchantment is a story about discovering that the last thing you want is sometimes the one thing you need. “This is a potent coming of true age novel. One that gently leads us to leave behind all we imagined as lost, encourages us to embrace what adventure of the simple day lies ahead. The Road to Enchantment carries us into that place beyond the dark hour where the power of story reigns, truth will not be denied, and all the magic of this life will be remembered.” –River Jordan

A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK “Part love story, part history, this novel is a tour de force [told] in language that soars and sears.”—More St. Petersburg, 1917. After Rasputin’s body is pulled from the icy waters of the Neva River, his eighteen-year-old daughter, Masha, is sent to live at the imperial palace with Tsar Nikolay and his family. Desperately hoping that Masha has inherited Rasputin’s healing powers, Tsarina Alexandra asks her to tend to her son, the headstrong prince Alyosha, who suffers from hemophilia. Soon after Masha arrives at the palace, the tsar is forced to abdicate, and the Bolsheviks place the royal family under house arrest. As Russia descends into civil war, Masha and Alyosha find solace in each other’s company. To escape the confinement of the palace, and to distract the prince from the pain she cannot heal, Masha tells him stories—some embellished and others entirely imagined—about Nikolay and Alexandra’s courtship, Rasputin’s exploits, and their wild and wonderful country, now on the brink of an irrevocable transformation. In the worlds of their imagination, the weak become strong, legend becomes fact, and a future that will never come to pass feels close at hand. Praise for Enchantments “A sumptuous, atmospheric account of the last days of the Romanovs from the perspective of Rasputin’s daughter, [told] with the sensuous, transporting prose that is Kathryn Harrison’s trademark.”—Jennifer Egan “[A] splendid and surprising book . . . Harrison has given us something enduring.”—The New York Times Book Review “[Harrison delivers] this oft-told moment with shocking freshness. . . . Masha re-invents our ideas of Rasputin, and the world of Nicholas and Alexandra is imbued with a glow whose fierceness is governed by the imminence of its loss.”—Los Angeles Times “A mesmerizing novel.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “Bewitching . . . Harrison sets historic facts like jewels in this intricately fashioned work of exalted empathy and imagination, a literary Fabergé egg. . . . [A] dazzling return to historical fiction.”—Booklist (starred review) Look for special features inside. Join the Random House Reader’s Circle for author chats and more.

Set in an African village, this follow-up to the Man Booker Prize–winning novel is “sometimes whimsical, sometimes bawdy . . . Fraught with wild visions” (The Times). “All is not well in the African village where Azaro lives. The child narrator of poet and novelist Okri’s The Famished Road, who had outwitted death in the previous book, again relates the oppressive events that continue to plague his village and his family. While political factionalization shatters the community's cohesiveness, the prodigious bar owner Madame Koto, chief exponent of the ‘Party of the Rich,’ alternately exudes portentous metaphysical malaise and miraculous erotic force. Little Azaro, himself touched and distracted by a series of animuses, follows the heels of ‘dad,’ who is a resounding vessel, by turns, of cantankerous egotism and abased self-sacrifice. This Nigerian epic reveals a violent provincial world, opaque with magical spirits which place horrendous ethical demands on fragile and fickle humanity, as if to test each individual for a thread of virtuous constancy at the core. Events drench the essentially linear narrative with all the ruthless sensuousness of a tropical storm, and Okri’s prose is lucid and deft.” —Publishers Weekly “Okri conjures up the fabulous with the same ease as he affectingly details the ways of the human spirit in a lovingly evoked African setting teeming with life—both real and mythic . . . Stunning.” —Kirkus Reviews “Once again we’re bedazzled and bedeviled by Okri’s phantasmagoric prose and the strange and wondrous sensibility of Azaro, a spirit-child living in a poor African village.” —Booklist “Both a love story and an account of the political turmoil between the parties of Rich and Poor.” —The Independent “Passages of extraordinary beauty . . . Okri paints a convincing surrealist picture.” —The Sunday Times

Three boys, three diverging destinies-but what, or who, is pulling the strings? It was a memorable summer: with the broken-down old road that suddenly turned into a strip of gleaming asphalt, and the abandoned motorbike the three boys found as a rusty heap and built into a racer. But it was also more than that, more than a distraction from the boredom of their small Tuscan town, than a few weeks of racing and dodging the attentions of the local Marshal. For Jacopo and his two friends, it began their journeys out into the world, separated by thousands of miles, steered by something other than fate-helped on their way, and controlled...Tautly written and deeply moving, Enchantment is more than a simple coming-of-age story, it is a powerful, original novel from an important, compelling new author.Pietro Grossi, writer and translator, was born in 1978 in Florence and currently lives and works in Tuscany. His collection of short stories, Fists, and his novel The Breakare also published by Pushkin Press."A fine writer" Tobias Jones, The Sunday TimesPraise for The Break: "Small and perfectly formed ... reaching its end leaves the reader desirous to start all over again" Amanda Hopkinson, IndependentPraise for Fists. "There is more power and pathos in this short piece of spare, timeless prose than in most densely-written novels" Daniel Hahn, Independent

They were as different as the creatures of the land are to the creatures of the sea. Their world was “Enchantment”. Darth and Lana adopt an orphan Indian boy and assist a child prostitute. The story is much like a story of a family - but this is a tale from a Life in the Spirit. A mystical tradition in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic ways of life. Buddhism has an equivalent. It is a life after a spirit is born. Strong virtual reality visions form in the mind and the tale unfolds as Lana and Darth create a family life as close to true life as possible. It is one tradition of Life in the Spirit and this novel an insight into this tradition. Darth and Lana, she an Islamic woman of faith, he more or less a Catholic man of faith, are called to develop a Life in the Spirit for an orphan beggar child and a child prostitute. For as long as this takes they accept one another as “husband and wife in the spirit” and look after their children in the spirit – for all we know such children could be angels. An important part of the tradition is for two people to also develop a story of how they met and fell in love. Why do two people do this? The answer is tradition. True life events are often used as the basis for virtual reality type experiences and situations. Parts of the story are from ordinary life as these happened – the story of how Darth came across Lola, for example, is largely from true life. The last chapters are their children now young adults explaining about the Life in the Spirit groups they put together. The explanation is in the form of a chapter about how two people met and fell in love – each group is giving the reader a hint. Those who can understand the hint may be able to find a way to their door and into Life in the Spirit and become part of the mystery. Note that these last chapters are from different Life in the Spirit groups: University (Chapter 28; Roman Catholic); The Way of Love (Chapter 29; Islam: Enchantment Faith Paths), The Way of Wisdom (Chapter 30; Jewish), The Way of Solomon (Chapter 31; Islam: Holy Islam Faith Paths), the Way of Kismet (Chapter 32; Hindu), First Step to Heaven (Chapter 33; Buddhism).
