This quantitative causal-comparative study sought to determine if there was a difference in self-efficacy with classroom management between different levels of experience among teachers: pre-service, novice, mid-career, and late-career. Classroom management is an aspect of education that many teachers have famously struggled with, resulting in an increasing number of teachers leaving the field. Strong classroom management self-efficacy among teachers results in higher confidence levels for managing disruptions and unwanted behavior within the classroom. For this study, 166 participants were drawn from a convenience sample of elementary, public, and charter school teachers and pre-service teacher candidates from universities within the state of Utah. The Efficacy in Classroom Management subscale of the Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale was used to assess the strength of self-efficacy for teachers with different experience levels. An ANOVA tested if a difference in classroom management self-efficacy could be attributed to teachers with different classroom experience levels. The results of this study showed a statistically significant difference between the self-efficacy scores of novice teachers and late-career teachers. The data did not reveal a statistically significant difference between the self-efficacy scores of pre-service and mid-career teachers. This suggests that teaching experience may have some impact on self-efficacy, but other factors likely play a more significant role in determining skill in classroom management. Recommendations for future research are made, including doing a longitudinal study, different methods of data collection, or including other variables such as teacher motivation, burnout, and job satisfaction.

Many middle school students with learning disabilities obtain their education in general education classrooms. These classroom settings are referred to as inclusion classrooms. We must not only consider that the student population is becoming increasingly more diverse, but we must also consider that the educators who teach in these type of classrooms are diverse as well. Teacher qualifications, training, and education that educators receive before and after entering a classroom can be quite varied and really important when considering the work that needs to be done to ensure successful inclusion classrooms. The purpose of this study was to examine novice educators reports on the strategies teacher education programs use to promote self-efficacy in classroom management. The goal was to determine what strategies were used in teacher education programs to promote selfefficacy in classroom management for pre-service teachers and to develop a list of recommendations for best practice in teacher education programs. This study implemented an action research approach and was qualitative in design. Participants were recruited from a Regional Educational Service Center (RESC) in Connecticut. Data from ten interviews and a three person focus group were collected. Bandura’s (1979) selfefficacy theory was the conceptual framework used to guide this study and the development of research questions for interviews and focus group protocol. Consistent with the literature, novice educators reported a lack of classroom management instruction in teacher education programs. Novice educators reported that academic content was the main focus of teacher education programs and the attention to classroom management instruction was minimal. Participants offered several suggestions to improve teacher education programs to educate pre-service teachers in classroom management using a holistic and systematic approach that is viable across colleges, universities, schools, and alternative teacher preparation programs. Three conclusions were derived from this study. One conclusion is that self-efficacy in classroom management is developed through clinical experiences. These include any performance based tasks pre-service educators experience in coursework (through scenarios, planning, paperwork, environmental design, role play, etc.) or in a classroom setting. Novice educators reported a need for more clinical experiences in teacher education programs. A second conclusion was that self-efficacy in classroom management is developed through observation. Novice educators reported observation can occur in classrooms or through the use of videos. Observing teachers being unsuccessful was just as important as observing successful teachers in promoting ones’ self-efficacy. The third conclusion was that self-efficacy in classroom management was best developed through relationships. These relationships involve students, peers, professors, cooperating teachers, supervisors, co-workers, administrators, and being cognizant of oneself. The overarching recommendation of this study is that teacher education programs should be mindful of providing clinical experiences, direct observations involving classroom management techniques, and the fostering of relationships between all constituent groups when preparing pre-service teachers.
