Forests are an important component of natural capital and deliver a broad range of ecosystem services that underpin human well-being. The extent and condition of forests in many parts of the world, however, have declined dramatically during the preceding decades due to unsustainable harvesting of timber, forest fires, urbanization, and conversion to agriculture. At the same time the acknowledged importance of forest ecosystem services (FES) continues to grow, particularly the need for climate change mitigation and adaptation. This paper is a background document developed for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) report on The State of the World’s Forests (SOFO) 2022. It reflects the results of a collaboration between FAO and the Foundation for Sustainable Development (FSD) to update the Ecosystem Services Valuation Database (ESVD). The compilation of systematically reviewed and standardized economic values of FES consolidated in the ESVD includes value estimates for all FES in nine forest ecosystem types and mangroves as per The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) and the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) classifications. This paper offers an improved understanding of the role of forests in sustainable development, and highlights the potential of forests to provide a pathway towards greater resilience and a green recovery.

Against the backdrop of the Glasgow Leaders’ Declaration on Forests and Land Use and the pledge of 140 countries to eliminate forest loss by 2030 and to support restoration and sustainable forestry, the 2022 edition of The State of the World’s Forests (SOFO) explores the potential of three forest pathways for achieving green recovery and tackling multidimensional planetary crises, including climate change and biodiversity loss. The three interrelated pathways are halting deforestation and maintaining forests; restoring degraded lands and expanding agroforestry; and sustainably using forests and building green value chains. The balanced, simultaneous pursuit of these pathways can generate sustainable economic and social benefits for countries and their rural communities, help sustainably meet increasing global demand for materials, and address environmental challenges. The State of the World’s Forests 2022 presents evidence on the feasibility and value of these pathways and outlines initial steps that could be taken to further pursue them. There is no time to lose – action is needed now to keep the global temperature increase below 1.5 °C, reduce the risk of future pandemics, ensure food security and nutrition for all, eliminate poverty, conserve the planet’s biodiversity and offer young people hope of a better world and a better future for all.

FAO’s most recent global synthesis on planted forests was released in 2009 and the last Unasylva on planted forests was published in 2005. Developed together with a coalition of external partners, including the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) task force on planted forests and the TreeDivNet network, Issue 254 hereby responds to the need for wider information-sharing on data, tools and approaches available for leveraging the contributions of planted forests to meet the target of increasing the global forest area of 3 percent by 2030, which Global Forest Goal 1 provides for. Unasylva issue 254 was launched in November 2023 at the International Congress on Planted Forests 2023 (ICPF2023) – the first edition of this global forum to be held in Africa (Nairobi, Kenya).

Value chain analysis offers a critical lens to understand the actors and activities connecting production to consumption, revealing market access pathways, key influencers and power dynamics, and the distribution of financial margins. Despite established methodologies for agriculture, guidance for assessing and upgrading forest-based value chains (FBVCs) remains limited. Agroforestry (farming systems with trees) has been practised for millennia across the world, but its significance as a relevant part of land use has not been formally recognized. As global food demand continues to increase, farmers are increasingly relying on intensive use of existing croplands and land clearing, resulting in environmental degradation. This degradation includes the loss of biodiversity and vital ecosystem services that support human well-being. However, recent discourses suggest that unlocking the potential of agroforestry could offer a solution to this pressing challenge. By harnessing agroforestry, we have the opportunity to support biodiversity in agricultural landscapes, improve agricultural productivity and livelihoods, and provide numerous ecosystem services such as nutrient retention, erosion control, carbon sequestration, pollination, pest control and fire risk reduction. Agroforestry encompasses a wide spectrum of practices including natural vegetation remnants, Taungya, hedgerows, windbreaks, home gardens, forest farming, riparian buffers, fallow areas, silvopasture and alley cropping. By exploring these diverse agroforestry systems worldwide, we can better understand the comprehensive range of ecosystem services they offer. One of the greatest challenges faced by humanity in the Anthropocene is to reconcile biodiversity conservation with the demands of economic development, which often involves converting forestland to other land uses. Globally, forest conversion and unsustainable management practices in agricultural landscapes are driving the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services. Recent research has advanced our understanding of the potential of agroforestry as a solution to environmental degradation, highlighting the need to unlock its potential to achieve both local and global sustainable development goals. However, scientific evidence on the impacts of agroforestry on biodiversity and ecosystem services is not yet universally available. To upscale agroforestry practices, it is crucial to gather field-based evidence that demonstrates the benefits of biodiversity conservation through agroforestry. This evidence will support informed decision-making by farmers, advisory services, and policy-making bodies. Therefore, this issue aims to present information and evidence from various regions of the world, shedding light on the diverse services provided by agroforestry and how these systems are being utilized in the current era of climate change and sustainable development.
