In 2006, Hizbullah operatives captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border attack, prompting a 34-day war in which neither Israel nor Hizbullah emerged victorious. Yet despite Hizbullah's instigation of the war, Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah, Secretary-General of Hizbullah, largely retained both his popular appeal and his legitimacy during and after the conflict. Noting this paradox, I examine how Nasrallah maintained his legitimacy, defined as having an accepted claim to authority, throughout and after the war. To do so, I perform content analysis on the seven major speeches that Nasrallah delivered during the war in order to answer the following question: How did Nasrallah utilize rhetoric to maintain his legitimacy as Hizbullah's leader throughout the 2006 war between Israel and Hizbullah? I then draw upon these observations to discuss my subsidiary research question: How does having a better understanding of political rhetoric, particularly in terms of Hizbullah, affect U.S. policies towards the Middle East, and specifically in Lebanon? I argue that Nasrallah framed his message in these speeches using three particular themes: the "us versus them" narrative; the fulfillment of a divinely inspired mission, also known as the NasR ilaahi, or the divine triumph theme; and Hizbullah's role as the protector of the Lebanese and the Palestinians. In tandem with Hizbullah's self-identification as a resistance movement, I show that Nasrallah continuously qualified Hizbullah's mission as defensive. I also demonstrate that Nasrallah chose his words to foster a sense of community and common purpose. Additionally, I note that he often appealed to values widely held through the Arab world, including the sense of karaama, or dignity, and taDaamun, or solidarity, in his remarks. To answer the second question, I review current U.S. policies towards Lebanon and note the ways in which these policies may not resonate with the Lebanese population. I argue that current U.S. policies, which focus on supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces, the Internal Security Forces, developing stronger civil society, and promoting democratization, do not counter Hizbullah's power partly because U.S. public diplomacy initiatives do not take Nasrallah's rhetoric and legitimacy into account.

Pretexts of Authority describes the Renaissance rhetoric of authorship and authority by examining the textual locus where this rhetoric appears in its most concentrated and complex form - the preface. In the process, it shows how the notion of authorship changed in a shift of systems of authorization during the Renaissance, a shift that coincides with the roots of the modern public sphere and with the change from religion to science and the public good as the intellectual court of appeal for legitimizing authorship. The author focuses on prefatory materials to kinds of texts that most fully exemplify the problem of self-authorization during the Renaissance. First, he examines Protestant prefaces, notably Luther's preface to his collected works and Milton's antiprelatical tracts. These works stand at the center of a rhetorical crisis; having abrogated the authority of the Catholic church through an appeal to the conscience of the individual, reformers found it necessary to forge a persona that could authorize their discourse without implying an authorizing will independent of God's. At the same time, these texts must attempt to close off means of authorization to potentially proliferating imitators. The second group of prefaces the author examines is to scientific works, notably those of Francis Bacon and Rene Descartes, who faced problems analogous to those of the Protestant reformers in their attempts to set aside Aristotelian authority without seeming to establish a personal authority that interrupts the transparent, impersonal discourse of scientific inquiry. The book argues that in both sets of texts the rhetorical quandary can be resolved only through recourse to the nascent notion of common sense, which allows an author to garner authority from an assumed bond with the audience. Authors no longer need to posit a privileged and suspect relation with the "master texts of Scripture" and the "Book of Nature," but can instead assume the mutual intelligibility of their text. This assumption is seen as the cause of the decline of the full-blown prefatory practice of the Renaissance.

How did the G.W. Bush administration manage to persuade Americans to go to war in Iraq in March 2003? How was this intervention, and the global campaign named as “war-on-terror,” legitimised linguistically? This book shows that the best legitimisation effects in political discourse are accomplished through the use of ‘proximization’–a cognitive-rhetorical strategy that draws on the speaker’s ability to present events as directly and increasingly affecting the addressee, usually in a negative or threatening way. There are three aspects of proximization: spatial, temporal and axiological. The spatial aspect involves the construal of events in the discourse as physically endangering the addressee. The temporal aspect involves presenting the events as increasingly momentous and historic and hence of central significance to both the addressee and the speaker. The axiological aspect consists in a growing clash between the system of values adhered to by the speaker and the addressee, and the values characterizing a third party whose actions, ideologically negative, are made “proximate” and thus threatening. Although the tripartite model of proximization proposed in the book is very complex at the level of its linguistic realisation, the working assumption is intriguingly basic: addressees of political discourse are more likely to legitimise pre-emptive actions aimed at neutralizing the proximate “threat” if they construe the threat as personally consequential. The book shows how language of the war-on-terror, and especially the rhetoric of the Iraq war, respond to this precondition.

One of the most notorious differences between the academic production on management carried out in Europe, compared to that in the United States, is the attention that European scholars give to the managerial discourse and rhetorics, especially in their textual or written embodiments. In fact, it is one of the few topics where the usual dominance of American scholarship (Engwall, 1998) does not hold. Discourses in management address basically two issues, most often of analytical intertwined in practice, differentiated here only because requirements. One, is the legitimization, both ideological and political, of management, basically geared at the justification of the differentials of power present in the coordination of collective action aimed at the consecution of economic objectives. As Bendix points out in Work and Authority in Industry, the most pressing challenge for this ideological work stems from the fact that in capitalism the logic of efficiency is hegemonic, and this is not easily conducive to the justification of status differentials. This is why managerial discourses are never open, straightforward, and why they are, in sum, clearly ideological.
