Troilus And Criseyde written by Geoffrey Chaucer and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-13 with categories.

Chaucer's epic poem of 8,239 lines recounts the tragic love storybetween Troilus and Criseyde during the Siege of Troy. In this regard, some consider this work to be a 'courtly romance' since Homer's original character of Troilus had been developed, during medieval times, to become that of a lover. However, that transformation was not of Chaucer's invention. The elaboration of Troilus' character had first appeared in the twelfth century in Benot's de Sainte-Maure's Roman de Troie - which was the source for Boccaccio's Il Filostrato written in the late 1330s. Nevertheless, Chaucer's adaptation of those source materials was so extensive that Troilus and Criseyde is regarded as a completely new poem.Chaucer's epic is divided into five books. This volume contains Book 4 -in which Troilus and Criseyde are separated.Although suitable for all readers, this edition is designed to meet the particular needs of high school and college/ university students. Here, each odd-numbered page contains Chaucer's original Middle English text printed in a large font. Alongside, there is plenty of room in the wide margin for readers to write brief notes or produce a glossary to define unfamiliar words. Immediately opposite, there are blank ruled pages for students to write their own translation or to make more detailed notes. This volume contains the complete and unabridged text (with line numbers) and a personal study or translation workbook - which means it offers excellent value for money.

"Through the analysis of magic as a metaphor for the mysterious workings of writing, Glamorous Sorcery sheds light on the power attributed to language in shaping perceptions of the world and conferring status." "David Rollo considers a series of texts produced in England and the Angevin Empire to reassess the value and nature of literacy in the High Middle Ages. He does this by scrutinizing metaphors that represent writing as a form of sorcery or magic in Latin texts and in the work of the Old French writer Benoit de Sainte-Maure. Rollo then examines the ambiguous representation of literacy as a skill that can be exploited as a commodity." "Glamorous Sorcery demonstrates how closely interconnected certain types of vernacular and Latin writing were in this period. Uncovered through a series of illuminating, incisive, and often surprising close readings, these connections give us a new, more complex appraisal of the relationship between literacy, social status, and political power in a time and place in which various languages competed for cultural sovereignty - at a critical juncture in the cultural history of the West."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Gender Transgressions written by Karen J. Taylor and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-22 with Literary Criticism categories.

This collection, comprising nine critical essays from prominent and emerging medievalists, seeks to explore the different ways in which French authors of the Middle Ages transgress normative social and cultural gender codes in their literary works Offering fresh approaches to texts that have long been subjected to polarized critical analyses, the essays challenge traditional interpretations of gender roles in Old French literature, especially in the thematic areas of sexual deviation and transgression. This corpus emerges as possessing multiple shades and subtleties of meaning, long buried or ignored by conventional approaches to these texts. This is a conclusion much more in accord with what we know about the ability of the medieval imagination to grasp multiple meaning from a single word or act. The collection provides many examples of this multi-layering of transgressive meaning. Through the detailed studies of gender transgressions such as incest, cross-dressing, rape and homoeroticism, the reader will come to understand the many facets of the literary expression of sexuality in selected Old French texts, products of a society that was at least as diverse and complex as our own. These studies will be of particular value to those interested in Old French and gender studies by dint of accessible analyses of texts both familiar and arcane. The provocative subject matter makes the studies original and eminently readable.
