The Declension of the Roman Vertue after the Overthrow of Carthage. *5ervilius Caepio put an end to the War begun by Viriatus: Porapeius and Mancinus are fared. to submit to base Conditions of Peace with the Numantines. HE First of theScifio's extended the Power of Rome; the Last of them introduced its Luxury: For when the Fear of Carthage was removed, and the Rival of the Roman Grandeur deur destroyed, she rushed into Vice, not by a gradual Declension, but by a violent Degeneracy from Virtue. The ancient Discipline was neglected, and a new Form was introduced. The City was instantly betrayed from Industry to Sloth, from Ambition in Arms, to love of Pleasure; from Labour and Business, to Ease and Effeminacy. 'Twas at this time that Scipio Nafica built the Galleries in the Capitol; that Metellus erected those I have already mentioned j and Cn. OEiavius added others, which bear his Name, and far exceed the rest in Beauty. And this publick Magnificence was attended with private Luxury. A dangerous and ignominious War then ensued with Spqin, under the Command of Viriathus, the Leader of the Robbers. 'Twas carried on with very dubious Success, so that the Romans had very often the Disadvantage in the Field. But Viriatbus their General being killed, rather by the Treachery than Valour of Servilms C fio; that of Numantia broke out with greater Fury. This City could never fend more than ioooo Men into the Field j but (whether it happened from the rigid Obstinacy of their Temper, the UnexpeUnexperience of our Generals, or the Indulgence of Fortune) they obliged many of our Commanders, especially Potnpey, a Man of great Reputation (the..

Velleius Paterculus' short work is the earliest surviving attempt on the part of a post-Augustan historian to survey the history of the res publica from its origins to his own times. In a period from which no other contemporary historical narrative survives in more than meagre fragments, Velleius' work is uniquely important. It is a critical counter to the later accounts of Tacitus, Suetonius and Cassius Dio, not simply because it offers a different view of Tiberius, but because Velleius saw continuity where later authors saw only radical change which destroyed the Republic and put monarchy in its place. For other reasons, too, Velleius occupies a unique position in Roman historiography. This collection of papers, by a distinguished cast of scholars, represents a wide-ranging re-examination of Velleius' work, of its place within, and contribution to, Roman historiography and the intellectual history of the early Principate.

Tiberius has always been one of the most enigmatic of the Roman emperors. At the same time, his career is uniquely important for the understanding of the Empire's development on the foundations laid by Augustus. Barbara Levick offers a comprehensive and engaging portrait of the life and times of Tiberius, including an exploration of his ancestry and his education, an analysis of his provincial and foreign policy and an examination of his debauched final years and his posthumous reputation. This new edition of Tiberius the Politician contains a new preface and a revised bibliography.

This essential document for the study of Roman history traces the story of Rome from Romulus and the foundations of Rome to the reign of the Emperor Tiberius. It is especially valuable to historians and students for its vivid eyewitness account of the dramatic years that saw the Roman Empire emerge from the chaos left by the shattered Republic. Rendered with the non-specialist in mind, the translation—the first English language translation in nearly ninety years—seeks to remain faithful to the original while avoiding technical and obscure jargon. The volume includes a substantial introduction to Velleius' life and times, and to the literary context of his historical work, as well as generous and detailed notes on the text, a bibliography, map, glossary of unfamiliar terms, and an index.
