To what extent has the demand for a vicarious experience of other cultures fuelled the expectation that the most important task for writers is to capture and convey authentic cultural material? This text argues that authenticity is in fact a restrictive category of literary judgment.

British Romantic literature descends from a line of impostors, forgers and frauds. Through a series of case-studies - beginning with the golden age of forgery in the late eighteenth century and continuing through canonical Romanticism and its aftermath - Margaret Russett demonstrates how Romantic writers distinguished their fictions from the fakes surrounding them. The book examines canonical and lesser-known Romantic works alongside fakes such as Thomas Chatterton's medieval poems and 'Caraboo', the impostor-princess. Through original readings of works by Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Walter Scott, John Clare, and James Hogg, as well as chapters on impostors in popular culture, Russett's interdisciplinary and wide-ranging study offers a major reinterpretation of Romanticism and its continuing influence today.

A Natural History Of The Romance Novel written by Pamela Regis and has been published by University of Pennsylvania Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-08-31 with Literary Criticism categories.

The romance novel has the strange distinction of being the most popular but least respected of literary genres. While it remains consistently dominant in bookstores and on best-seller lists, it is also widely dismissed by the critical community. Scholars have alleged that romance novels help create subservient readers, who are largely women, by confining heroines to stories that ignore issues other than love and marriage. Pamela Regis argues that such critical studies fail to take into consideration the personal choice of readers, offer any true definition of the romance novel, or discuss the nature and scope of the genre. Presenting the counterclaim that the romance novel does not enslave women but, on the contrary, is about celebrating freedom and joy, Regis offers a definition that provides critics with an expanded vocabulary for discussing a genre that is both classic and contemporary, sexy and entertaining. Taking the stance that the popular romance novel is a work of literature with a brilliant pedigree, Regis asserts that it is also a very old, stable form. She traces the literary history of the romance novel from canonical works such as Richardson's Pamela through Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Brontë's Jane Eyre, and E. M. Hull's The Sheik, and then turns to more contemporary works such as the novels of Georgette Heyer, Mary Stewart, Janet Dailey, Jayne Ann Krentz, and Nora Roberts.

What draws people to study abroad or volunteer in far-off communities? Often the answer is romance – the romance of landscapes, people, languages, the very sense of border-crossing – and longing for liberation, attraction to the unknown, yearning to make a difference. This volume explores the complicated and often fraught desires to study and volunteer abroad. In doing so, the book sheds light on how affect is managed by educators and mobilized by students and volunteers themselves, and how these structures of feeling relate to broader social and economic forces.

Exposing the complicity of social practices, identities, and communities with capitalism, this critique opens the possibility of genuine alliances across differences among groups such as gay consumers in the United States and Mexian maquiladora workers, Christian right "family values" and Asian "crony capitalism". Discover The Secrets To Building Healthy, Happy and Rewarding Relationships We all want that special 'someone' who's going to love us unconditionally, honour us and accept us for just being who we are. Authentic love and connection are enormously powerful bonds between two people. Unfortunately though, if we've had more than our fair share of bad relationships through our lifetime. Then it can become easy to suspect there's no right person, just many different alternatives of wrong. We have a staggering divorce rate which causes untold damage to the partners and even more so to their children. It is common, perhaps expected, for relationships to suffer from maladaptive patterns over time (it's like a car that needs maintenance) and these are fixable when both partners do the work. Our interpersonal relationships start forming as soon as we're born, and psychologists have studied how those early connections can set the stage for the other relationships we form later in life. The attachment theory argues that a strong emotional and physical bond to one primary caregiver in our first years of life, is critical to our development. Change the way you view every type of relationship you have ever had, and will ever have. Make healthier choices in choosing who to date, and discover a new dimension of connection, where relationships can become an institution for unlimited creativity, fulfilment, intimacy, and love. If you are in a relationship, this book will show you how to examine the unknown path that you'll travel with your spouse, and carefully evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of your relationship. If you are single, this book will help you to become clear and define what you want in your ideal future partner - and also what you don't want!
