Excerpt from Sestrina: A Romance of the South Seas As this script will probably be the only serious, authentic record of Clensy's life from that time when he left Hiva-oa on a schooner for the South American coast, to arrive eventually at port-au-prince, Hayti, it will be as well to let the uninformed know something about his mode of life at the date when he met Adams. It will be sufficient to say that Clensy had been roaming about the various isles of the Marquesan group for three months before he decided to go farther afield. Adams was a destitute drunken reprobate-and he looked it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Gabrielle of the Lagoon: A Romance of the South Seas Though it was night and there was no moon, a dim, wierd light lay over the isle and pierced to the depths of the forests. It was in the Solomons, where the dark, picturesque surroundings of palm and reef, the noise of the distant surfs, made a suitable setting for anything unexpected. Even the silver sea-birds had weird, startled-looking eyes down Felisi beach way. And when the wild brown men crept away from the grave-side of one whom they had just buried in the forest, the winds sighed a fitting music across the primeval heights. But there was nothing strange in that; men must die wherever one goes, and it was a common enough occurrence in that heathen land where the ocean boomed on the one side and inland to the south-west stood the mountains, looking like mighty monuments erected in memory of the first dark ages. Across the skies of Bougainville the stars had been marshalled in the millions. It seemed a veritable heathen faeryland as the night echoed a hollow "Tarabab!" But even that heathenish word was only the tribal chief's yell as he stood under the palms conducting the semi-religious tambu ceremony. The tawny maidens and high chiefs, with their feather head-dresses, all in full festival costume, were squatting in front of the secret tambu stage, some mumbling prayer, others beating their hands together as an accompaniment. Excerpt from White Shadows in the South Seas It is not given to every man to start on the quest of the rainbow's end. Such fantastic pursuit is not for him who is bound by ties of home and duty and fortune to-make. He has other adventure at his own door, sterner fights to wage, and, perhaps, higher rewards to gain. Still, the ledgers close sometimes on a sigh, and by the cosiest fireside one will see in the coals pictures that have nothing to do with wedding rings or balances at the bank. Excerpt from A South Sea Lover: A Romance The sun had sunk into the limitless expanse of the South Pacific, and almost before the last glories of his going had vanished, the ripe stars shone out across the silence of the trackless sea. On the soft sand of the shore, in the greater darkness of the palms that fringed it, with eyes that saw nothing but their inner vision, a girl was standing gazing to the south. The water of the calm lagoon owed in little ripples round her naked feet, gleaming, glancing, ashing starlight where the broken water caught the kiss of heaven. On the reef outside, the never-sleeping surf beat with its unresting song; and the cloud of Spray that rose and fell, and rose to fall again, from the coral rocks of the barrier, shone palely like a mystic veil against the low golden warmth of the horizon. The soft breathing of the tropic night, which rustled the slender palm leaves overhead, was heavy with the odour of the pale, new-opened owers that, shy of the daylight, unclosed their heavy petals to the night and wafted their love to the stars. The long, level shore was deserted but for. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Romance of the South Pole Byron's voyage, in 1764 - 6, in his Majesty's ship the Dolphin. Byron sailed from the Downs to Rio de Janeiro, and from that place he proceeded to Port Desire, and afterwards to the coast of Patagonia. He next passed up the Strait of Magellan to Port Famine. Then he visited the Falkland Islands, and in returning passed up the Strait Of Magellan as far as Cape Monday, where he carefully explored the several bays and harbours formed by the coast on each side. From Cape Monday he sailed into the South Seas. In latitude 14 10' S. He discovered a cluster of islands, where he hoped to find some re freshment for the sick members Of his crew, who were in a deplorable condition; but failing in this, he named the group the Islands of Disappointment. In about the same latitude Byron discovered two other inhabited islands, to which he gave the name of King George's Islands. In running from these islands to the islands of Saypan, Tinian, and Aguisan, he found another island of considerable extent, which he called the Prince of Wales's Island. Further discoveries fol lowed, including a group of reefs which were named the Islands of Danger. Byron afterwards visited Batavia and other places, but he does not seem to have attained a high southern latitude. Excerpt from South Sea Foam: The Romantic Adventures of a Modern Don Quixote in the Southern Seas The Polynesians believed that their great ancestors were metamorphosed into stars in this belief there is something of the Egyptian and Hellenic touch. There are many star-legends concerning the origin of the conspicuous constellations of their lovely skies, legends that strangely resemble those of Greek mythology. As Circe turned Odysseus' comrades into swine, so did the heathen goddesses turn Samoan warriors into crabs, snakes, and cuttle-fish. Travellers have often been struck by this resemblance in south-sea mythology to the folk-lore of the western world. The resemblance, I think, is easy enough to understand, for Man is man wherever one goes in this wide world. Be he black, tawny, or white, his innermost hopes and aspirations are much the same.
