When Martin Luther distributed his 95 Theses on indulgences on October 31, 1517, he set in motion a chain of events that profoundly transformed the face of Western Christianity. The 500th anniversary of the 95 Theses offered an opportunity to reassess the meaning of that event. The relation of the Catholic Church to the Reformation that Luther set in motion is complex. The Reformation had roots in the late-medieval Catholic tradition and the Catholic reaction to the Reformation altered Catholicism in complex ways, both positive and negative. The theology and practice of the Orthodox church also entered into the discussions. A conference entitled “Luther and the Shaping of the Catholic Tradition,” held at The Catholic University of America, with thirteen Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant speakers from Germany, Finland, France, the Vatican, and the United States addressed these issues and shed new light on the historical, theological, cultural relationship between Luther and the Catholic tradition. It contributes to deepening and extending the recent ecumenical tradition of Luther-Catholic studies.

Written in accord with the Catechism of the Catholic Church and rooted in the sound catechetical principles of the National Catechetical Directory, these texts present a well-defined curriculum model that stresses clear objectives, careful organization, and creative methods and evaluation procedures to check the attainment of goals. Very flexible, allowing teachers to select materials to highlight and stress, each text can be implemented on various grade levels for a quarter, a semester, or a full year depending on the length and frequency of class meetings. Intended to function as the primary textbook for a semester or year-long course in a Catholic high school at the eleventh and twelfth grade levels the goal of the course is to help students understand the interrelationship of the components of the Catholic Church. This course emphasizes the living Church and what it is in the present moment and is constructed around themes such as the Church as the People of God, the Church as servant, and the Church as sacrament. Each theme traces major periods of Church history and provides insights as to how the Church has come to its contemporary expression. Recognizing that to truly understand what it means to be Catholic, one must look not only at current theology, worship, and belief, but how those things were developed and accepted through history, The Church: Our Story combines a discussion of ecclesiology -- literally the "study of the nature of the Church" -- with a discussion of Church history. The purpose of the historical sections are not to recount all of the significant events over the past two thousand years, but rather to give insight into the beliefs, practices, and tensionsin Catholicism today that resulted from their historical roots.

The Vatican. The Inquisition. Contraception. Celibacy. Apparitions and miracles. Plots and scandals. The Catholic Church is seldom out of the news. But what do its one billion adherents really believe, and how do they put their beliefs into practice in worship, the family, and society? This down-to-earth account goes back to the early Christian creeds to uncover the roots of modern Catholic thinking. It avoids getting bogged down in theological technicalities, and throws light on aspects of the Church's institutional structure and liturgical practice that even Catholics can find baffling: why go to confession? How are people made saints? What is 'infallible' about the Pope? Topics addressed include: • scripture and tradition • sacraments and prayer • popular piety • personal and social morality • reform, mission, and interreligious dialogue Lawrence Cunningham, a theologian, prize-winning writer and university teacher, provides an overview of Catholicism today which will be indispensable for undergraduates and lay study groups.

The Decline And Fall Of The Catholic Church In America written by David R. Carlin and has been published by Sophia Institute Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Religion categories.

Many Catholics blame Vatican II for the decline of the Church in America these past 30 years: traditionalists say it caused too many changes, liberals say too few. In this book, sociologist David Carlin shows that although Vatican II was the flashpoint for change in the Church, the roots of today's crisis go deeper than anything that happened at the Council. Basing his conclusions on sociological analysis rather than on theology or Church teachings, Carlin shows that in the 1960's the Church in America was weakened by the triumph of tolerance as an American virtue (which led Catholics to downplay their uniquely Catholic beliefs for the sake of unity) and then was battered by a culture that, seemingly overnight, had become boldly secularist and even libertine. Called by Vatican II to engage the culture in order to evangelize it, while pressed by the culture to downplay its Catholicity in the name of tolerance, the Church in America lost its way. The result? A widespread loss of Catholic identity; weakening of fidelity to Church teachings; Catholics abandoning their faith; and a diminishment of the Church's role as a moral voice in American society. Carlin's analysis has uncovered a problem that's older and even more dangerous for the future of Catholicism than the deeds that have lately thrust the Church onto the front pages. Indeed, says Carlin, the scandals are merely symptoms of this deeper problem that will continue to drain the Church's vitality long after the scandals are forgotten.

"American Catholic Traditions gathers together essays that make a new scholarship accessible to a wide audience. The contributors recover and reamplify the voices of such American Catholic pioneers as William F. Lynch and Francis Gigot. Their chorus is joined and enriched by a host of others, from Dorothy Day and the Grail women to Black Elk and the film characters of John Ford. Indeed, the history of American Catholic life and thought holds the kinds of intellectual and spiritual resources needed to renew American Catholic theology and rescue it from abstraction." "American Catholic Traditions offers stimulating resources for recovering the roots of American Catholicism to theologians, teachers, scholars and students, and all those who want to learn and reflect on the roots of American Catholicism and its meaning today."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
