Shobana Shankar's groundbreaking intellectual history tackles the controversial question of how Africans and Indians make and unmake their differences. Drawing on archival and oral sources from seven countries, she traces how economic tensions surrounding the Indian diaspora in East and Southern Africa collided with widening Indian networks in West Africa and the Black Atlantic, forcing a racial reckoning over the course of the twentieth century. While decolonization brought Africans and Indians together to challenge Euro-American white supremacy, discord over caste, religion, sex and skin color simmered beneath the rhetoric of Afro-Asian solidarity. This research focuses on Punjab, across the India–Pakistan border, specifically on the cities of Amritsar and Lahore. Their proximity, shared colonial past, socio-cultural ties, and entangled urban heritage offer a unique setting for comparative research on postcolonial urban governance and transformation. The book examines how governance practices shape urban dwellers’ access to housing and services in specific neighbourhoods and contribute to the (re)production of socio-spatial in/exclusion. Rather than relying on a property rights lens, it adopts and expands Access Theory, conceptualising access as the ability to derive benefits from material, institutional, and symbolic resources. This lens foregrounds governance mechanisms and power relations that enable, control, and maintain access over time. Case studies in Amritsar and Lahore engage with theoretical mergers—such as access assemblages, evolutionary governance, and city\scapes—to explore neglected dimensions of urban processes, including human/non-human interfaces and socio-material infrastructures. By unraveling contestations over access, the research traces evolving governance arrangements and dependencies. While grounded in these two cities, the findings contribute to broader debates on postcolonial and South(east)ern urbanism, especially in border regions.

Why are abnormal figures at the heart of literary canon and what do they tell us about the society that writes and circulates these stories? This book studies the constitution of disability and discusses concepts of corporeal difference that are socio-historically rooted in the Indian cultural milieu. The volume aims at looking at the central issue of the various aspects of disability representation, the impact of these representations on the materially embodied experience of disablement, the political imperatives shaping the narratives of corporeal difference, and the influences of highly particularised local cultural context on the constitution of epistemic and discursive notions of corporeality. The volume follows three routes of inquiry: How do we find 'disability' in texts or, what are 'disability texts'? How do we read concepts historically using literary and cultural texts and what would a similar study of the Indian context reveal? How do we study culturally distinct ways of narrating bodyminds?
