Explores the wartime experience of rural Australians during World War I, focusing on the country towns and hamlets of north-eastern Victoria. Demonstrates how the experience of the war was dramatically localised in rural areas, as its every aspect was shaped by individual journalists, councillors or leading local citizens. Details the impact of this intimacy on German inhabitants, who were known as trusted neighbours in rural communities, though reviled as 'the enemy' in the cities. Includes photographs, tables, notes, bibliography and index. Author is head of the history and politics program at the University of Wollongong.

This book will appeal not only to historians and geographers, but to many who maintain a deep interest in the British countryside and its past, and to those who continue to share a fascination for the Second World War, in particular the 'home front'. The Battle of the Fields tells the story of rural community and authority in Britain during the Second World War by looking at the County War Agricultural Executive Committees. From 1939 they were imbued with powers to transform British farming to combat the loss of food imports caused by German naval activity and initial European mainland successes. Their powers were sweeping and draconian. When fully exercised against recalcitrant farmers, dispossession in part or whole could and did result. This book includes the most detailed analysis of these dispossessions including the tragic case of Ray Walden, the Hampshire farmer who was killed by police after refusing to leave hisfarmhouse in 1940. The committees were deemed successful by Whitehall as harbingers of modernity: mechanization, draining, artificial fertilizers, reclamation of heaths, marshes and woodlands. We now deplore some of these changes but Britain did not starve, in large part thanks to their efforts. This book will appeal not only to historians and geographers, but to many who maintain a deep interest in the British countryside and its past, and tothose who continue to share a fascination for the Second World War, in particular the "home front". It will also demonstrate to all who are anxious about food security in the modern age how this question was dealt with 70 years ago. BRIAN SHORT is Emeritus Professor of Historical Geography at the University of Sussex, and formerly Dean of School and Head of the Department of Geography.

In addition to famine and disease, war had a considerable impact on rural society in early modern Europe. Myron Gutmann studies this impact through a systematic analysis of military, economic, and demographic variables as they affected the Basse-Meuse area in Eastern Belgium and the Netherlands between 1620 and 1750. "Rural life in North America has changed dramatically over the past few decades. Corporate-backed factory farms, mining interests, and large-scale tourist developments have replaced the family farm, and the small farmers who remain are strangled by debt, hounded by government, and harassed by regulations. Rural First Nations face a similar struggle, as do small-town businesses. However, those who seek to make rural life extinct are meeting with some fierce resistance." "In this book, a writer who is a farmer himself uses the microcosm of his own rural community to portray the groups involved and the battles they are fighting. The outcome of these clashes will decide not only the future of rural life but also the quality and sustainability of our food, our water, our soil, and our air."--Jacket.

J.L. Anderson seeks to change the belief that the Midwest lacks the kind of geographic coherence, historical issues, and cultural touchstones that have informed regional identity in the American South, West, and Northeast. The goal of this illuminating volume is to demonstrate uniqueness in a region that has always been amorphous and is increasingly so. Midwesterners are a dynamic people who shaped the physical and social landscapes of the great midsection of the nation, and they are presented as such in this volume that offers a general yet informed overview of the region after World War II. The contributors—most of whom are Midwesterners by birth or residence—seek to better understand a particular piece of rural America, a place too often caricatured, misunderstood, and ignored. However, the rural landscape has experienced agricultural diversity and major shifts in land use. Farmers in the region have successfully raised new commodities from dairy and cherries to mint and sugar beets. The region has also been a place where community leaders fought to improve their economic and social well-being, women redefined their roles on the farm, and minorities asserted their own version of the American Dream. The rural Midwest is a regional melting pot, and contributors to this volume do not set out to sing its praises or, by contrast, assume the position of Midwestern modesty and self-deprecation. The essays herein rewrite the narrative of rural decline and crisis, and show through solid research and impeccable scholarship that rural Midwesterners have confronted and created challenges uniquely their own.
