This volume aims to commemorate, criticize, scrutinize and assess the undoubted significance of the Russian Revolution both retrospectively and prospectively in three parts. Part I consists of a palimpsest of the different representations that the Russian Revolution underwent through its turbulent history, going back to its actors, agents, theorists and propagandists to consider whether it is at all possible to revisit the Russian Revolution as an event. With this problematic as a backbone, the chapters of this section scrutinize the ambivalences of revolution in four distinctive phenomena (sexual morality, religion, law and forms of life) that pertain to the revolution’s historicity. Part II concentrates on how the revolution was retold in the aftermath of its accomplishment not only by its sympathizers but also its opponents. These chapters not only bring to light the ways in which the revolution triggered critical theorists to pave new paths of radical thinking that were conceived as methods to overcome the revolution’s failures and impasses, but also how the Revolution was subverted in order to inspire reactionary politics and legitimize conservative theoretical undertakings. Even commemorating the Russian Revolution, then, still poses a threat to every well-established political order. In Part III, this volume interprets how the Russian Revolution can spur a rethinking of the idea of revolution. Acknowledging the suffocating burden that the notion of revolution as such entails, the final chapters of this book ultimately address the content and form of future revolution(s). It is therein, in such critical political thought and such radical form of action, where the Russian Revolution’s legacy ought to be sought and can still be found.

Charting the life and writings of Władysław Bieńkowski, a leading politician and writer in communist Poland and sometime right-hand man and ideologue of the Polish leader Władysław Gomułka, this book outlines the shifts in the nature of communism in Poland throughout the period of communist rule. It considers the shaping of Bieńkowski’s ideas in eastern Poland, later occupied by the Soviet Union, during the economic depression, the development of his great hopes for socialist socio-economic transformation as the right way forward, and his attempts as Gomułka's aide to enact “people’s democracy” and “socialist humanism” in the period 1945 to 1948, attempts which failed, Stalinist repression coming to the fore instead. This book further discusses Bieńkowski’s role as a minister in the period following Stalin’s death, when Bieńkowski was a leading “revisionist”, warning of the dangers of the “petrification of the system”, and explains how with a sense of shattered hopes he resigned from power and became a dissident, publicly critical of the regime. This book concludes by examining Bieńkowski’s writings in late communist times when, now just an observer, he continued to reflect on and write about the future of socialism. Overall, the book demonstrates to what extent communism in Eastern Europe was flexible and adaptable and not rigidly monolithic as it is often portrayed. Karen Petrone shatters the notion that World War I was a forgotten war in the Soviet Union. Although never officially commemorated, the Great War was the subject of a lively discourse about religion, heroism, violence, and patriotism during the interwar period. Using memoirs, literature, films, military histories, and archival materials, Petrone reconstructs Soviet ideas regarding the motivations for fighting, the justification for killing, the nature of the enemy, and the qualities of a hero. She reveals how some of these ideas undermined Soviet notions of military honor and patriotism while others reinforced them. As the political culture changed and war with Germany loomed during the Stalinist 1930s, internationalist voices were silenced and a nationalist view of Russian military heroism and patriotism prevailed.
