A Day Apart How Jews Christians And Muslims Find Faith Freedom And Joy On The Sabbath written by Christopher D. Ringwald and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-01-08 with Religion categories.

The Sabbath is the original feast day, a day of joy and freedom from work, a holy day that allows us to reconnect with God, our fellows and nature. Now, in a compelling blend of journalism, scholarship and personal memoir, Christopher D. Ringwald examines the Sabbath from Creation to the present, weaving together the stories of three families, three religions and three thousand years of history. A Day Apart is the first book to examine the Sabbath in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. A marvelously readable book, it offers a fascinating portrait of the basics of the three Sabbaths--the Muslim Juma on Friday, the Jewish Shabbat on Saturday and the Christian Lord's Day on Sunday--and introduces us to three families, including Ringwald's own, and shows how they observe the holy day and what it means to them. The heart of the book recounts the history of the Sabbath, ranging from the Creation story and Moses on Mount Sinai, to the teachings of Jesus and Muhammad, the impact of the Protestant Reformation and the Industrial Revolution, and the rise of the modern weekend. Ringwald shows that the Sabbath instinct, to observe a special day of withdrawal and repose, is universal. Indeed, all religions and philosophies teach that life is more than toil, that time should be set aside for contemplation, enjoyment and culture. In today's frantic 24/7 world, the Sabbath--a day devoted to rest and contemplation--has never been more necessary. A Day Apart offers a portrait of a truly timeless way to escape the everyday world and add meaning to our lives.

Sabbath Time explores the roots of the Sabbath in the Judeo-Christian tradition. This revised and updated edition demonstrates how a deeper understanding and practice of the rhythm of the Sabbath provide an alternative to society's rhythm of achievement and escape. Sabbath Time also heightens our appreciation of the relationship between ministry and contemplation in our contemporary world. Edwards offers readers a revealing vision of ways to maintain faithfully the balance among worship, play, rest, work, community, and ministry.

Sabbath worship as a communal event does not feature in the Hebrew Bible. In the context of the first century CE, according to Philo and Josephus, the sabbath gatherings took place only for the purpose of studying the law, and not for the liturgical recital of psalms or prayer. Classical authors depict Jews spending the sabbath at home. Jewish inscriptions provide no evidence of sabbath-worship in prayer-houses (proseuchai), while the Mishnah prescribes no special communal sabbath activities. The usual picture of Jews going on the sabbath to the synagogue to worship thus appears to be without foundation. It is even doubtful that there were synagogue buildings, for "synagogue" normally meant "community." The conclusion of this study, that there is no evidence that the sabbath was a day of communal Jewish worship before 200 CE, has far-reaching consequences for our understanding of early Jewish-Christian relationships. Do you have questions about Judaism? Do you wonder why Jews don't accept Jesus as Messiah? Why Jews are so attached to the State of Israel? Why has there been so much hatred of Jews over the centuries? What you should bring (or more importantly, what not to bring) to the Passover Seder to which you've been invited? How to relate to Jews who are close friends or even new family members of yours? If you do, then this is the book for you. Written in a friendly, informal style, A Christian's Guide to Judaism is an introduction to Jewish religion, history, culture, and holidays written especially for the curious non-Jew. Its goal is to not only answer the questions that you may have about Judaism but also to make you feel more at home when you are invited to Jewish celebrations such as weddings and bar or bat mitzvahs. Have a quick question about what's kosher or why traditional Jewish men keep their head covered? See the subject in the chapter called "Jewish Practice in Lots of Nutshells." The fascination of Christians with Judaism has taken many forms over the years, from virulent anti-Semitism to intense interest regarding the religion of Jesus. This much-needed book provides Christians with a broad overview of the Jewish people and their religion, presents thorough explanations of Jewish laws and traditions, and explains in detail the many similarities--and key differences--between the Christian and Jewish faiths. +
