Saints and Sinners is a fictionalised account of the lives of Queen Margaret and her husband Malcolm III, King of Scots. Princess Margaret of Wessex, her sister Princess Cristina, their brother Edgar the Atheling, the one-time uncrowned King of England; and their mother Princess Agatha, arrive on the shores of Scotland, escaping the threat of William the Conqueror. They seek refuge at the court of the widowed King Malcolm III, who promises to try and help Edgar regain his throne and protect his family. The rough warrior-king has set his sights on the beautiful and pious Margaret, whose ambition is to join a convent and become a nun. Their conflicting personalities adjust to find a way through to lasting happiness. Proud and headstrong Margaret helps to reform the Celtic Church, to the dismay of many Scots. The Queen's maid, Rowena, harbours a secret that could destroy their happiness. The story follows their lives, how Queen Margaret dedicated hers to the Scots people, helped the cause of the Saxon slaves, and how she started the Queen's Ferry across the Firth of Forth to help the pilgrims. It also looks at the miracles attributed to her and how she ultimately earned a sainthood.

Abductions In The American Revolution written by Christian McBurney and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-16 with History categories.

The tactic of kidnapping enemy leaders, used in the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, dates to the American Revolution. George Washington called such efforts "honorable" and supported attempts to kidnap the British commander-in-chief (twice), Benedict Arnold (after he turned traitor) and Prince William Henry (a future king of Great Britain). Washington in turn was targeted at his Morristown winter headquarters by British dragoons who crossed the frozen Hudson River. New Jersey Governor William Livingston performed a patriotic service by going to considerable lengths to avoid being abducted by the Loyalist raider James Moody. Sometimes these operations succeeded, as with the spectacular captures of Major General Charles Lee, Major General Richard Prescott, Brigadier General Gold Selleck Silliman, and North Carolina's governor Thomas Burke. Sometimes they barely failed, as with the violent attempt by British secret service operatives against Major General Philip Schuyler and the mission by British dragoons against Thomas Jefferson. Some of the abducted, such as signer of the Declaration of Independence Richard Stockton and Delaware's governor John McKinly, suffered damage to their reputations. The kidnapper risked all--if caught, he could be hanged. This book covers more than thirty major attempted and successful abductions of military and civilian leaders from 1775 to 1783, from Maine to Georgia, and including two in Great Britain.

Landon Carter S Uneasy Kingdom written by Rhys Isaac and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-07-15 with History categories.

Landon Carter, a Virginia planter, left behind one of the most revealing of all American diaries. In this astonishingly rich biography, Isaac mines this remarkable document--and many other sources--to reconstruct Carter's interior world as it plunged into revolution. The aging patriarch, though a fierce supporter of American liberty, was deeply troubled by the rebellion and its threat to established order. His diary, originally a record of plantation business, began to fill with angry stories of revolt in his own little kingdom. Carter writes at white heat, his words sputtering from his pen as he documents the terrible rupture that the Revolution meant to him. Indeed, Carter felt in his heart that he was chronicling a world in decline, the passing of the order that his revered father had bequeathed to him. Not only had Landon's king betrayed his subjects, but Landon's own household betrayed him: his son showed insolent defiance, his daughter Judith eloped with a forbidden suitor, all of his slaves conspired constantly, and eight of them made an armed exodus to freedom. The seismic upheaval he helped to start had crumbled the foundations of Carter's own home. In Landon Carter's Uneasy Kingdom Rhys Isaac unfolds not only the life, but also the mental world of our countrymen in a long-distant time. Moreover, in this presentation of Landon Carter's passionate narratives, the diarist becomes an arresting new character in the world's literature, a figure of Shakespearean proportions, the Lear of his own tragic kingdom. This long-awaited work will be seen both as a major contribution to Revolution history and a triumph of the art of biography.
