This collection of H.G. Wells's correspondence draws on over 50 archives and libraries worldwide, including the papers of Wells's daughter by Amber Reeves. The book contains over 2,000 letters, and while a few are business – to publishers, agents and secretaries – the majority are much more personal. Wells's private correspondence extends from letters to President Franklin Roosevelt and Prime Ministers Winston Churchill and A.J. Balfour, to persons such as ‘Mark Benney’, who wrote novels based on his life in the slums and his time in prison. There is correspondence too with his many female friends and lovers, among them Rebecca West, Eileen Power, Gertrude Stein, Marie Stopes, Lilah MacCarthy and Dorothy Richardson. For example, a letter from Moura Budberg, with whom Wells had a long-standing affair, which announces that she is pregnant by him and about to have an abortion, reveals how an advocate of birth control is himself caught out. Wells also enjoyed correspondence with the press, particularly during the two World Wars, and with various BBC officials and people who worked on his films. Some of his letters on the controversies of free love, socialism, birth control, the Fabian Society, and the nature of the curriculum of the new London University in the 1890s are included. Interspersed chronologically with Wells's letters is a small selection of about 40 letters to Wells, where letters from him are not extant. Among these are letters from Ray Lankester, Joseph Conrad, C.G. Jung, Trotsky, Hedy Gatternigg (the woman who attempted suicide in Wells's flat), and J.C. Smuts. The letters are arranged in these periods: Volume 1 1878–1900; Volume 2 1901–1912; Volume 3 1913–1930; and Volume 4 1930–1946. H.G. Wells's works include The Time Machine (1895), The Invisible Man (1897), The War of the Worlds (1898), The History of Mr Polly (1910), and A Short History of the World (1922).

I am not the first member of my family to leap over a wall. Nearly four hundred years ago, my ancestor, Thomas Baldwin of Diddlebury, leaped to freedom from behind the walls of the Tower of London, where he had been imprisoned for taking part in a plot for the escape of Mary Queen of Scots. His name, with an inscription and the date ‘July 1585’ can still be seen where he carved it on the wall of his cell in the Beauchamp Tower. Later, he added a motto to his coat-of-arms, Per Deum meum transilio murum— ‘By the help of my God I leap over the wall’. It has been the family motto of the Baldwins ever since; but the wall that I leapt over was a spiritual and not a material obstacle. In 1914, my cousin, William Sparrow, who disapproved of my entering the convent, wrote to me: “ Knowing you as I do, I can safely predict that it will be with you as with another fair and foolish female, whose unwisdom caused her to languish long behind prison walls. Your End will be your Beginning. I commend these words, with those of the family motto, to your meditations. Taken together, they may suggest a course of action in years to come.” In the following pages I have tried to describe what happened when my cousin’s rather ambiguous prophecy was fulfilled. It is a rash and foolhardy undertaking, in the circumstances, for I really know nothing about anything, except, perhaps, what goes on behind ‘high convent walls’. My only excuse is that so many, and such different kinds of people, have urged me to attempt it. Some of them said to me, ‘Because of your past environment, your angle is unusual. It should interest people. You ought to write about it.’ Others simply bombarded me with questions. It is chiefly on their account that I have embarked upon this book. Some of the remarks made to me revealed such fantastically wrong ideas about nuns and convents that I began to feel something ought to be done to put the monastic ideal in a truer perspective for those who know little’ or nothing about it. So I have tried to write accurately and fairly about life in a strictly enclosed convent, as I myself experienced it. To do this it was necessary to describe not only the wonderful and exalted spiritual ideal which inspires that life, but also certain aspects of it which, for various reasons, may perhaps leave something to be desired. I do not feel that I have done my subject justice. If, however, these pages help to straighten out even a few of the curiously crooked notions which so many people still appear to retain about convents, I shall be well satisfied.

Excerpt from Father William Doyle S. J: Fourth Impression The latter portion of this memoir recounts Fr. Doyle's experiences as Military Chaplain. It has been compiled almost entirely from the letters or budgets which he used to send home to be perused by his relatives and intimate friends, without the slightest ulterior thought of publication. In including these interesting letters from the Front, it has not been my intention, any more than it was the writer's, to make another addition to war literature.' This book claims to be simply the record of an apostolic life and the study of a very remarkable spiritual personality. His experiences at the Front are of biographical and spiritual interest and help to correct what might otherwise be a partial -or misleading impression. In obedience to the decree of Pope Urban VIII. I protest that all that is written in this life of Fr. Doyle has no other force or credit than such as is grounded on human authority. Hence no expression or statement is intended to assume the approbation or anticipate the decision of the Church. The 22nd French Dragoons have a long and glorious history on the field of battle since 1630 to the Napoleonic battlefield of Austerlitz, Eylau, Jena it was called again to duty in the First World War, one of its members trooper Christian Mellet recorded his experiences in and out of the saddle. At the initial onrush of the French armies into Belgium to get to grips with the enemy Mallet and his regiment trotted out to war from Rheims in Northern France. The French forces in the Vosges and Alsace attacked en masse and were slaughtered whilst the cavalry that Mallet was a member fell back before stronger German forces. Fortunes swung back to the Allies side and as the Allies fought the battle of the Marne; Mallet, in the thick of it, remembers that he and his fellow troopers were exhausted and “covered with a layer of black dust adherent from sweat, looked like devils”. Mallet and his comrades then faced the war on foot as the chance to use mounted troops gave way to the advent of trenches; he fought on bravely until an attack at Loos where as Mallet recalls “we entered the zone of Hell.”. The Author by now a junior officer had the responsibility of leading his men, but suddenly felt “a brutal blow in the back with the butt-end of a rifle” but it was actually a vicious shell fragment that tore into his back. Mallet kept his men fighting for the time being until relief could arrive but was thereafter honourably discharged from the Army due to his wounds. Few memoirs of the French cavalry still exist and fewer still have been translated into English making this both rare and compelling. Mallet writes in an easy style which is filled with anecdotes on the march or out of the line and vivid vignettes of the fighting which appeared as a blur to him amidst the shot and shells.
