The Money Doctor In The Andes written by Paul W. Drake and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989 with Business & Economics categories.

The Money Doctor in the Andes is an account of the technical assistance missions to five Andean republics--Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, Bolivia, and Peru--undertaken by Princeton University economist Edwin Walter Kemmerer during the 1920s. Drake demonstrates that in each case the Kemmerer mission recommended an identical series of monetary, fiscal, and banking reforms, adding occasional recommendations on everything from administrative reorganization to penal code reform as local circumstances seemed to warrant. In each case, too, local legislatures adopted all the main Kemmerer proposals virtually without debate or modifications. Drake links the Kemmerer missions to vital developments in the political economic history of the Andean republics in the interwar period. He analyzes the domestic interest groups and political forces whose convergent strategies gave the Kemmerer missions their remarkable record in achieving local success for the reforms proposed. Second, Drake situates the Kemmerer missions at the center of a process of political modernization that created new institutions and policy agencies in each of the five countries; the missions thereby contributed to the expansion of the central government as an agent of development in ways that later differed sharply from Kemmerer's orthodox policies. Finally, The Money Doctor in the Andes regards developments in the Andean countries in the context of the region's developing economic ties to the United States. Expectations that Kemmerer's plans would simultaneously attract foreign capital and control inflation drew support from sectors as diverse as trade unions and landowners. When the Depression deepened, Kemmerer's policies proved counterproductive and the fragile consensus that had installed them fell apart, but the political and administrative reforms endured--with far-reaching consequences.

Examines the origins, lifestyles, and influence of the middle class in Peru during the first half of the 20th century. In their pursuit of protective legislation, higher pay, and better working conditions, white-collar workers, or empleados, recast long-standing cultural notions of rank and respectability. Their ideas inspired a series of legal reforms reinforcing the distinction between manual and nonmanual workers that became a permanent feature of Peruvian labor law and practice. Militarism And Politics In Latin America written by Daniel Masterson and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991-08-26 with History categories.

This comprehensive case study of the modern Peruvian military examines the professional development of South America's most controversial military establishment from the early 1930s to the present. Based on extensive research in Peruvian military archives and numerous interviews with active and retired members of the Peruvian armed forces, this study is placed in the context of Peruvian national politics and South American military affairs. Particular emphasis is given to the impact of France and U.S. military theory upon the Peruvian military mentality. Revolutionary politics from the Alianza Popular Revolucionaria Americana (APRA) in the 1930s to the present day's Sendero Luminoso also figure prominently. This study also explores the rationale behind General Velasco's social and economic reforms (1968-1975) and assesses the Velasco government's legacy for contemporary Peru. For the first time, the Soviet Union's heavy involvement in Peru is examined. As the only comprehensive case study in English of the modern Peruvian military, this volume will be of interest to students and scholars of contemporary Latin America. This is a detailed historical study of the highly complex Peruvian military establishment and its place in Peruvian society. It includes a review of the 1930s; an in-depth analysis of the armed forces from the late 1930s to the first Belaunde regime (1963-1968); the immediate antecedents of Peru's 12-year military government (1968-1980) known as the Docenio; preliminary overview of the Docenio and its troubled legacy; an assessment of the Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) insurgency; and a critique of the armed force's counter terrorism campaign. Militarism and Politics in Latin America draws extensively on Latin American and U.S. archival sources, and personal interviews, and includes rare photographs.

The Chinese In Latin America And The Caribbean written by Walton Look Lai and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with History categories.

The Chinese migration to the Latin America/Caribbean region is an understudied dimension of the Asian American experience. There are three distinct periods in the history of this migration: the early colonial period (pre-19th century), when the profitable three-century trade connection between Manila and Acapulco led to the first Asian migrations to Mexico and Peru; the classic migration period (19th to early twentieth centuries), marked by the coolie trade known to Chinese diaspora studies; and the renewed immigration of the late 20th century to the present. Written by specialists on the Chinese in Latin America and the Caribbean, this book tells the story of Asian migration to the Americas and contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the Chinese in this important part of the world.
