The ancient tradition of church sanctuary underwent a revival in the late 1970s. Christian churches began providing physical protection to migrants living without legal status and who were facing imminent deportation in church buildings and communities: first in the United Kingdom and then in the United States, Canada, and several other European countries. These practices arose amidst a dramatic increase in the number of asylum-seekers arriving in the West, and a corresponding escalation in national and international efforts to discourage and control their arrival through myriad threats of deportation and other means. After Jerusalem, Bethel is the most frequently cited sanctuary in the Hebrew Bible. The book offers a detailed analysis of Bethel and its sanctuary from archaeological and biblical evidence. It reconstructs the history of Bethel and by analysing the presence of pro- and anti-Bethel propaganda, it argues that the latter, with its own pro-Jerusalem/Judah bias, has resulted in an unfair denigration of Bethel as an idolatrous place of worship. The study suggests that Bethel was a legitimate Yahwistic shrine and continued to be so even after the fall of the Northern Kingdom of Israel to the Assyrians. Hence, Bethel in a real sense was the principal means of configuring Israelite identity.

This study examines the speeches and prayers in the David-Solomon narrative in Chronicles and seeks to demonstrate that the Chronicler’s portrayal of David and Solomon attempts to establish the Yehudite community’s identity. Is the covenantal relationship still valid in the Persian period? The author asserts that as a commitment to YHWH involving the worship of YHWH through the Jerusalem temple, the covenantal relationship between YHWH and Israel continues even into the Persian period. This study employs Kennedy’s rhetorical method with the new categories of the narrative situation and the Chronicler’s situation being used to further delineate his concept of the narrative situation. The Chronicler’s portrayal of David and Solomon through speeches and prayers serves to persuade his audience of the significance of the Jerusalem temple, reformulating the Yehudite community identity as a cultic community in the Persian period.
