Excerpt from The Sanitary Condition of City and Country: Dwelling Houses The first edition of this booklet consisted mainly of a reproduction of two papers read before the American Public Health Association and the Public Health Association of New York, in 1876. These papers have been re-written, in the light of the advances made in the practice of House Drainage since that date, but their form has not been changed materially. The paper on Country Houses led to a lengthy correspondence in the American Architect and Building News. This correspondence was reproduced, originally, as affording the best presentation of my own views on the subject, and as meeting objections which were likely to arise in the minds of those who had given it only casual attention. Excerpt from The Sanitary Condition of the Laboring Population of New York: With Suggestions for Its Improvement, a Discourse Delivered on the 30th December, 1844, at the Repository of the American Institute No duty can engage the attention of the magistracy of a city or state, more dignified in itself, more beneficial to the present generation, or more likely to prove useful to their descendants, than that of pro curing and maintaining a sound state of the public health. Of the three objects contemplated in the Declaration of Independence as necessary to be secured by government, the first named is Life. Higher purposes cannot be conceived for which governments should be instituted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Social Innovations In Urban Sanitation In India written by Shubhagato Dasgupta and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-04-25 with Political Science categories.

This book discusses effective social innovation strategies facilitated by civil society organisations (CSOs) to tackle India’s significant urban sanitation challenge. It presents the contours of an ecosystem that includes citizen participation and strengthening community-managed systems for improved sanitation and public health. The book analyses case studies of effective sanitation programmes as well as experiments with innovative ideas in different regional contexts by CSOs to meet the contextual needs of the community and to ensure access to safe sanitation, especially among the urban poor. It highlights the challenges and the need for active participation of communities for change in behaviour, increasing institutional capacities of municipalities for standardising and scaling up strategies which work. The authors highlight the need for designing low-cost solutions, organising informal sanitation workers, serving marginalised communities and building effective alliances between communities and institutions to influence public policy. Rich in empirical data, this book will be useful for scholars and researchers of urban studies, public policy, governance, political science, development studies and sociology as well as for CSOs and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working on urban sanitation, urban planning and public policy.
