Theodosius and Valentinian were the two monarchs who appropriated that revenue, which they had been wont to draw from their scattered brethren, to their own treasury, by which means the. Patriarchal dignity was more effectually sn pressed than if it had been directly annulled by an e iet. In the IV est, the Jews enjoyed the full exercise of their religion under Honorius, who, much to his honour, enacted a law in favour of toleration. A strange affair happened about this time in the island of Candia, where the Jews were very rich numerous. One Moses pretending to be the Messiah, ran up and down and through every town and village of the island, persuading the Jews to follow him, and to be ready for. But they have their defence: the Oxford Manuals of English History are intended to serve a particular purpose. There are several good general histories already in use, and there are a considerable number of scattered 'epochs' or 'periods'. But there seems still to be room for a set of books which shall combine the virtues of both these classes. Schools often wish to take up only a certain portion of the history of England, and find one of the large general histories too bulky for their use.
