"Crowns and Scepters" is an investigation of the origins and history of the coronation ceremony that was created on crowning His Majesty King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. The book tells of pageantry, religious significance, and symbolism of the coronation ceremony, mentions some interesting incidents, anecdotes, and oddities connected with coronations, and provides a list of places usually connected with such ceremonies. It also tells stories of royal infants, usurpers, uncrowned kings, and pretenders that don't usually enter the official history of the monarchy.

A stunning tour de force and a remarkable achievement.- Alison Weir This is Our Island Story for the modern age. - Charles Spencer 'Not just a brilliant compendium of biographies, but the biography of an institution: a marvellous read' - Tom Holland 'This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle' (William Shakespeare, Richard II) The British monarchy is the one of the most iconic and enduring institutions in the world. It has weathered the storms of rebellion, revolution and war that brought many of Europe's royal families to an abrupt and bloody end. Its unique survival owes much to the fact that, for all its ancient traditions and protocol, the royal family has proved remarkably responsive to change, evolving to reflect the times. But for much of its history, it also spearheaded seismic change, shaping our religious, political and cultural identity and establishing the British monarchy as the envy of the world. There has never been a more apposite moment to consider the history of this extraordinary survivor. Within the next decade, there is likely to be a change of monarch, sparking renewed global interest on a scale not seen since Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953. Even the media and popular frenzy evoked by recent royal events such as royal weddings and births will not compare to that generated by the accession of a new king. In the lead up to this pivotal moment in Britain's history, Crown & Sceptre explores the history and evolution of the monarchy from 1066 to the present day, feeding the renewed interest not just in the modern royals but in the predecessors who helped shape the institution into what it is today. "Crown and Sceptre shows an astonishing command of a thousand years of the British monarchy, its traditions, roles and realities beyond the pageantry and romance. Talking Trojan written by Hilary Susan Mackie and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Literary Collections categories.

In this penetrating new look at the use of language in the Iliad, Hilary Mackie examines the portrayal of the opposing forces in terms not only of nationality but of linguistics. The way the Greeks and the Trojans speak, Mackie argues, reflects their disparate cultural structures and their relative positions in the Trojan War. While Achaean speech is aggressive and public, intended to preserve social order, Trojan language is more reflective, private, and introspective. Mackie identifies the differences between Greek and Trojan language by analyzing poetic formulas, usually thought to indicate a similarity of language among Homeric characters, and conversations, which are seen here to be of equal importance to the numerous speeches throughout the Iliad. Mackie concludes with analyses of the two great heroes of the Iliad, Hektor and Achilles, and the extent to which they represent their own cultures in their use of language.

Reveals how certain strategic metaphors embedded in the early Western literary canon have promoted--and continue to promote--systems of inequality and social control. Collins examines texts ranging from the Homeric epics and the Platonic dialogues to Virgil's Aeneid and the Book of Revelation. Drawing on the linguistic and documentary evidence of usages in early societies, chiefly Greek and Hebrew, Collins has produced a penetrating examination of social and personal structures in those worlds.
