Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. A synopsis of this drama will give a taste of its theme and quality:David Madison is on a schoarship at St.Donat's Abbey, a public school,. He quickly becomes popular with most of the other boys, Tony Masefield being his special friend. The exceptions are Richard DeMacey and Gilbert Roye, who resent him because of his popularity and because he is a free pupil; and they behave towards him in a cruel, snobbish and vindictive way.Things suddenly worsen even more when Mr.Ledwidge, an old and much-loved master, becomes ill and goes into a nursing home for treatment. He is replaced by Coleman, a pitiless, unstable young man, who immediately institutes a reign of terror in Lower School, to the delight of DeMacey and Roye and their cronies, whom he more or less plays up to, seeing the way things are. David becomes the particular target of his vicious and sadistic ways, being considered safe and fair game because he is a scholarship boy.Matters continue to deteriorate when Belford, a big, loutish, loud-mouthed bully, returns to school in spring, to join his old cronies, DeMacey and Roye and their friends, After a slanging match in the Common Room of Abbot's House, which ends in a boxing-cum-wrestling melee when David comes to grips with Belford when aiding the lively Tony, whose hot temper has got him into difficulties with the bully, Coleman arrives on the scene, and, as usual, picks on David as the instigator of the brawl. He reports him to the Headmaster, Dr.Princeton, who is unaware of what is going on in Lower School, as a bad influence and a trouble-maker which David answers in silence, knowing the futility of contradicting a teacher's word. Dr. Princeton tells him that in view of Coleman's statement, and since his school- work is no longer up to standard for a boy on a scholarship - he will have to report him to the Board of Governors, and warns him that this may mean him leaving the school. There is a temporary reprieve from this dread prospect when David, with the assistance of DeMacey, who is gradually cooling towards Roy and Belford, beginning to see them for what they really are. and warming towards David and his friends, bravely takes charge of things when Tony suddenly collapses and is rushed to hospital as an emergency when an eroded blood vessel causes serious haemorrhaging. This is the climax of an eventful day, when David, knowing that Tony isn't feeling well, despite his protests, shoulders the blame of authorship when Coleman is virtually handed an exercise-book by Roye which has very derogatory remarks about the master in it, and is given a severe beating.Roye and Belford watch venomously the growing friendship between Richard and David, waiting for an opportunity to harm David if they can.. This presents itself when two parcels are delivered to the school, one for David, the other for Coleman. They hide David,s parcel and switch the labels to Coleman's parcel. When Coleman hears that David has his parcel, he refuses to listen to any explanation for the peculiar mix-up and gives David his worst flogging.David can take no more. He runs away from school, but is brought back by the school doctor. It is only now that a horrified Dr.Princeton learns the whole sorry story of what has been going on in Lower School without his knowledge. In a charged, unofficial inquiry, he confronts Coleman, who tries to wriggle out of the accusations that are levelled against him by the boys of Lower School, who now feel free to talk out openly, by accusing them of grotesquely exaggerating everything and acting out of spite. To no avail, Dr.Princeton dismisses him from the school on the spot, and Roye and Belford are expelled when their part in the nefarious parcel affair is exposed in the same inquiry. All ends well. Mr.Ledwidge returns to the school, and Tony Masefield, too, and everything is back to glorious normality.

This excellent collection brings together Orwell's longer, major essays and a fine selection of shorter pieces. With great originality and wit Orwell unfolds his views on subjects ranging from a revaluation of Charles Dickens to the nature of Socialism, from a comic yet profound discussion of naughty seaside postcards to a spirited defence of English cooking. Displaying an almost unrivalled mastery of English plain prose, Orwell's essays created a unique literary manner from the process of thinking aloud and continue to challenge, move and entertain. The articles collected in George Orwell's Essays illuminate the life and work of one of the most individual writers of the XX century - a man who elevated political writing to an art. Essays included: - THE SPIKE - A HANGING (1931) - BOOKSHOP MEMORIES (1936) - SHOOTING AN ELEPHANT (1936) - DOWN THE MINE (1937) (FROM "THE ROAD TO WIGAN PIER") - NORTH AND SOUTH (FROM "THE ROAD TO WIGAN PIER") (1937) - SPILLING THE SPANISH BEANS (1937) - MARRAKECH (1939) - BOYS' WEEKLIES AND FRANK RICHARDS'S REPLY (1940) - CHARLES DICKENS (1940) - CHARLES READE (1940) - INSIDE THE WHALE (1940) - THE ART OF DONALD MCGILL (1941) - THE LION AND THE UNICORN: SOCIALISM AND THE ENGLISH GENIUS (1941) - WELLS, HITLER AND THE WORLD STATE (1941) - LOOKING BACK ON THE SPANISH WAR (1942) - RUDYARD KIPLING (1942) - MARK TWAIN-THE LICENSED JESTER (1943) - POETRY AND THE MICROPHONE (1943) - W B YEATS (1943) - ARTHUR KOESTLER (1944) - BENEFIT OF CLERGY: SOME NOTES ON SALVADOR DALI (1944) - RAFFLES AND MISS BLANDISH (1944) - ANTISEMITISM IN BRITAIN (1945) - FREEDOM OF THE PARK (1945) - FUTURE OF A RUINED GERMANY (1945) - IN DEFENCE OF P.
